KG1 C has begun the new unit of inquiry: How We Express Ourselves. We are discussing emotions and what makes us feel Happy, Sad, Angry or Scared. Don’t be surprised if your children come home and are able to explain exactly how they are feeling in a whole lot of new vocabulary. In Math, the children have discovered how to make the secondary colors: orange, green and purple and learning about 3-D shapes. We are beginning simple number stories and how to make a pattern.
In Literacy we read some stories with great focus and interest – We call this shared reading. This week the discussions before reading the story of the Little Red Hen were really amazing and showed just how far the children’s communication skills have come since the beginning of the school year. The discussion amongst the children went like this:
We discussed the word: hen and was there another word for it? Yes, Chicken. What was a baby chicken called? A chick. Sara asked if the hen was the one that made a noise to wake every one up in the morning. No, that was the rooster. Could we make the noises of the hen, chick and rooster? Yes. It was very loud. Then Latifa told us she had 4 chicken eggs but one got cracked by her brother, so there were only 3 left. Shamma said she had 3 chicken eggs and her brother broke 2 eggs so there was only 1 left. We all used our hands to do this counting and commiserated with these children. We did a math lesson in the middle of the story introduction!!! Then Sara mentioned that maybe sisters were better as they looked after the eggs better. Then Zayed said: Lets read the story, so we did.
And that, moms and dads is how our morning discussions go. Full speed ahead, amid great noise and participation. It really is great fun.
We have started our new Unit Of Inquiry ‘How We Express Ourselves’. We are learning how to tell stories in different ways, how to write stories and all about the different parts of a story. In the coming weeks, we will be making the setting and characters for our favorite stories! Keep an eye out for the exciting updates on see-saw and when we are finished, feel free to pop in and have a look!
