Student Teaching Requirement
During the final semester of MAT coursework, the MAT candidates who are the teachers of record, in a school district, under Option 6 temporary certification will not be required to complete a traditional student teaching experience. However, these students will participate in practicum coursework that will have assignments that meet the student teaching requirements.
WKU will work with the MAT candidates who are sponsored by a school district for a Grow Your Own program to fulfill this requirement while continuing to work in their district paraprofessional role.
All other MAT candidates who do not have a teaching position, with an Option 6 temporary certification, will be required to complete a traditional 16 week student teaching experience during their final semester. Please note this cannot be conducted during the summer.
MAT candidates, who do not have an Option 6 teaching position, should apply for student teaching one year in advance if they plan to do traditional student teaching. More information may be located on the WKU Student Teaching webpage.
MAT Candidates, who are completing traditional student teaching will attend student teacher seminars as professional development.
The traditional student teaching placement will be canceled if the MAT candidate secures a teaching position, with an Option 6 certification, after applying for traditional student teaching.
