Praxis Exams
Every MAT student will be asked to complete a Praxis Content Subject exam practice assessment when they enroll in the MAT program. This must be completed during the first semester of coursework. Upon enrollment in the MAT program, every student is added to a "Center for Literacy" blackboard course that contains practice Praxis Content subject exams.
WKU Literacy Center may have test prep resources available for loan.
Email literacy.center@wku.edu to borrow test prep resources.
An additional list of test prep resources may be found here: Praxis Prep.
Additional Praxis support is now offered by the state that has some possible reimbursement for exams. https://sites.google.com/ckec.org/kaet/home
ETS also offers Praxis Fee Waivers. Review that information here to see if you qualify.
Some MAT candidates must pass the content exam prior to taking any additional coursework after the first 12 hours of MAT coursework is earned. This is for content area candidates in middle grade and secondary certification (math, science, social studies, English language arts, Spanish, Chinese, business, physical education) that do not hold a bachelor degree in the same content area that they are seeking the certification. Candidates will be required to complete additional content coursework to help the candidate be successful.
How to Apply for the Praxis Exams
There are different exams with very similar names and different exams for different states. Be sure you are looking at the Kentucky exams. You should always verify you are using the correct KY test code as listed on the ETS website.
These test codes are subject to change, so students should check these before purchasing any online study resource to be sure you are ordering the correct one to support the exam you will be taking. If you need assistance, you may email teacher.certification@wku.edu to request clarification. One of the team members will be happy to assist you.
When registering for any exam on the ETS website, be sure you request for your scores to be reported to both WKU and EPSB (KY Educator Professional Standards Board). It is free to get score reports at the time of registration. However, ETS will charge you a fee to get the official scores reported at a later date. EPSB requires an official report be sent to their agency and to WKU. We are not allowed to accept the student score reports that ETS will send you.
Three certification areas do not need to take the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exam. Early Childhood (IECE), Learning Behavior Disabilities (LBD), and Moderate to Severe Disabilities (MSD) certification areas do not have to pass a PLT exam. All other certification areas must pass the PLT exam.
All certification areas, including IECE, LBD, and MSD must pass the Praxis II Subject Assesment exam(s) for the certification area.
