Once a MAT candidate holds an Option 6 teaching job, a university mentor will be assigned. The MAT mentor will serve in a coaching role, not an evaluative one. MAT University Mentors will:
Spend approximately two and a half hours each fall and spring semester with the MAT candidate, to total five hours per school year.
Conduct four onsite observations of the MAT candidate, per school year (two times per semester).
Every MAT Teacher candidate also has a district provided mentor that has agreed to meet with them for up to ten hours, per school year. WKU does not manage or facilitate this district mentoring. If the MAT candidate has questions about their assigned district mentor, they should contact their school administration.
Traditional MAT candidates who are not teaching under Option 6 temporary certification are not assigned a university MAT
mentor. However, during the practicum semester, when a traditional MAT candidate completes the traditional student teaching, they will be assigned a university supervisor for student teaching.
