Once your print comes out of the printer, it is in a green state. The part will shed powder as you handle it. Green parts will also be fragile. It is highly recommended that you infiltrate your part using either CA glue or an epsom salt mixture.
Materials need for infiltrating with CA glue.
The best CA glue to purchase is Star Bond. A 16oz bottle is recommended. This can be ordered through Amazon or purchased directly from Star Bond. It is important to only use only thin CA glue to solidify your part. The thicker CA glues are good for gluing your parts together if you have multiple parts or you have some breaks. Zap a Gap branded CA glue works as well, but will slightly gray your part. If you are printing in color, you must use the star bond thin CA glue to preserve the colors.
For the application process, you want to use a small drip bottle or a spray bottle to apply the CA glue. Star Bond includes several small bottles with their bigger bottles. Small spray bottles can be purchased online or at a pharmacy. The spray bottles will most likely be single use. For both processes, you need nitrate gloves, respirator, goggles and a roll of wax paper. You must do this either outside or in the spray booth fume hoods.
For the drip technique, pour some CA glue into a smaller drip bottle. Hold your model with your gloved hand and drop the CA glue over your part. One drop will radiate outward. Over lap each drop as you go. For thin parts, make sure you do both side evenly to avoid warping. Over applying will produce shinny spots on your model. Take you time and make sure you cover everything. Place your part on wax paper to fully cure.
For the spray bottle technique, place your model on some wax paper and dust your part with the CA glue. Apply only thin layers of CA glue. If you over spray the area, you will get shinny parts.
Epsom salt application is less toxic and cheaper to do. The trade off is that your part will be weaker than parts finished with CA glue. Color prints tend to look better with the epsom salt rather than CA glue.
Both Epsom salt and a large spray bottle can be purchased at your local drug store.
Pour 7 ounces of salt to 16 ounces of warm water. Mix up the solution thoroughly.
Lightly spray your part. A heavy spray will result in distorted features and collapsed parts. Let the part dry completely before adding another coat.
