Review Course Information
Courses available for the spring semester are listed below. Please see online course descriptions for more detailed information, and contact the Santiago Academics Team if you require syllabi. We will make every effort to meet your preferences, but you should have alternative courses approved by your home college in case a course is closed or canceled.
HST/IRP/LAS/PSC 424/PAI 624 – Dictatorships, Human Rights, and Historical Memory in Chile and the Southern Cone (3 credits) is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about Chile's recent turbulent history from those who lived it. The course is taught at the Syracuse Santiago Center by program director Dr. Mauricio Paredes.
This course will forever change the way you think about Chile and South America, the people you meet and study with there, and global human rights.
Optional: HST/WGS 380.51 - Trans History, Machismo, and Sex Work in Latin America (taught at Universidad Diego Portales). This course is offered in spring 2026 only and is taught by visiting Wake Forest University professor Dr. Mir Yarfitz. With Dr. Yarfitz, you’ll explore the history of gender and sexuality across 20th-century Latin America and the Caribbean. You’ll also apply new theoretical developments in gender, masculinity, and trans and queer studies to the region’s history of race, revolutions, migrations, dictatorships, and social movements.
Spanish language study is a requirement of our program. Because the language courses are not directly equivalent to U.S. university Spanish courses, it is possible that a course will repeat some previous study. These classes each carry 4 credits:
SPA 180 – Beginning Spanish
SPA 280 – Intermediate Spanish
Select the most appropriate Spanish language course based on your background in the language. Visiting students, please refer to the course descriptions on our website and consult with an advisor in the languages department of your home school if you're unsure of your language level. Syllabi are available upon request.
Matriculated Syracuse students: SPA 180 and 280 are not direct equivalents to the courses offered on SU's main campus. If you intend to continue your Spanish language studies when you return to campus, you will need to take a placement test to determine the appropriate SU SPA course level. (Subsequent Spanish courses taken on the main campus may repeat prior study.)
HST 406/IRP/LAS 334/PSC 428 – Contemporary Issues in Chile and Latin America (3 credits). You may not drop the Signature Seminar.
All courses below carry 3 credits and are discussed in greater detail in the course descriptions. Syllabi are available upon request.
COM 350 – Topics in Media Diversity and Inclusion: Diversity in Contemporary Chilean Film
CRS/ARC/SOC 380.50 – Chilean Identity in Concrete Images: From Indigenous Groups to Contemporary Architecture
ECN 380.9 – Latin American Economics. This course has a pre-requisite of [ECN 101 and ECN 102] or ECN 203, or the equivalent background in microeconomics and macroeconomics.
