Academic Policies
Due to immigration requirements, you may not drop below 12 credits at any point during the semester.
A typical course load is 13-16 credits. If you plan to take more than 16 credits, please email the Santiago Academic Team for permission.
You may not enroll in more than 19 total credits without approval from your home college. (Visiting students, please seek approval from Syracuse Abroad by emailing the Santiago Academic Team.) Registration over 19 credits is subject to additional per-credit tuition charges. Syracuse students in the Renée Crown Honors Program may seek approval from the program to have these additional tuition charges waived.
A Spanish language instruction course (4 credits). Undergraduates are required to study Spanish unless placing in SPA 300 or higher.
The Santiago Signature Seminar – Contemporary Issues in Chile and Latin America (3 credits). This is a traveling seminar that also includes classroom work at the Syracuse Santiago Center. In this course, we'll examines political, economic and environmental development in Latin America, with a focus on Argentina and Chile as case studies for contrast and comparison. The emphasis will be on the countries’ respective dictatorships and the economic models imposed by each one, and common and differing historical legacies and expressions of social justice and welfare. The field seminar includes travel to Argentina (Buenos Aires) and Chile (Patagonia and Valparaiso). Classes consist of lectures and field work and engagement with local NGOs, scholars, and communities.
Grades for Chilean university courses may not post until mid-June for spring semesters. You are responsible for ensuring that this timing will not adversely affect you academically or in terms of financial aid awarding.
IMPORTANT: You must remain in good academic standing to participate in our program. If you are placed on academic probation prior to departure, you will be withdrawn from the program.
Carefully review the academic policies applicable to all Syracuse Abroad students and programs.
At Syracuse University, all work for registered classes must be completed on or before the degree certification date. If you are graduating, check with your home college regarding your degree certification date, and be certain that you are aware of any remaining degree requirements.
Information on enrollment policies, grades, SU library resources, registration, internships, and independent research can be found on the Preparing to Go website.
Visiting students should also refer to the Syracuse Abroad website for information on transfer credit and requesting an SU transcript.
SU students only: If you need to take an online course during a semester abroad to stay on track for graduation, first review Syracuse Abroad-specific requirements and advice.
Arrangements to do coursework on an independent research basis, if needed to satisfy a degree requirement, must be made in advance. Due date for proposals is May 15 (for fall semesters) or November 15 (for spring semesters).
