BEFORE YOU REGISTER, you will need to do a number of things to prepare. Start with these NOW:
Due to Spanish immigration requirements, you may not drop below 12 credits at any point during the semester. (This does not count optional Signature Seminar credits.)
You may not enroll in more than 19 total credits without approval from your home college (visiting students seek approval from Syracuse Abroad). Registration over 19 credits is subject to additional per-credit tuition charges.
CAS 200 - Mapping Spain (1 credit) - This one-credit class begins online before your arrival in Madrid and includes in-person and online sessions in Madrid during the semester, and
At least one Spanish language course (3-4 credits).
Matriculated Syracuse University students: If you have not taken Spanish at SU, be sure you have taken the online placement exam/survey. If you don’t do this first, you will not be able to register for SPA!
During online registration, MySlice limits students to a total of 17 credits of Madrid courses. If you attempt to, you will receive the error message “Maximum term student unit load exceeded.”
If you plan to take more than 17 credits, email MadridAcademic@syr.edu prior to the start of online registration to explain your academic need for a heavy load during an abroad semester. You may take 18-19 credits without incurring additional tuition charges.
Many courses get you out of the classroom and into museums and cultural centers where you will view or experience what you are studying. Some of these courses carry fees for study tours, site visits, activities, or supplies that are an integral part of the course. Please carefully review the list of course fees, which explains briefly what these fees cover. Share this information with your parents and/or guardians if they are financially responsible for your fees. (A fee is also noted on the Schedule of Classes for any course requiring one.)
If you register for any course with a mandatory study tour, you must participate in this field study. Do not plan personal travel until you get to Madrid and know when you may be required to take part in any class-related study tours, all-program trips, make-up classes, exam periods, and other academic commitments. Otherwise, you may need to re-arrange conflicting personal travel at your own expense.
