These FAQs are to be used in conjunction with information in STEPS ONE, TWO, and THREE. They should NOT be considered a shortcut, nor a resource to be used instead of thoroughly reviewing all information on this site. Students who carefully prepare for registration by reading through all STEPS, using the Shopping Cart in advance, and registering as soon as their appointment allows will have the best chance of getting into their preferred courses. Please consider yourself strongly advised.

In general, unless directed otherwise due to a known compatibility issue, it is best to use the latest current stable release of Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge. (On mobile devices, the preferred browswers are Safari for iOS, and Chrome for Android.
For Android devices, Chrome is the only officially supported browser. Many Android devices come with a different "Android web browser" that can be branded by the vendor; often the icon is simply "Internet". These browsers, and any browser on an Android device other than Chrome, are specifically not supported. Updated Timetable (Use to check for time conflicts)
You will find your individual registration start date in the message under OrangeAbroad under Online application checklist > Registration Appointment and Instructions.
Syracuse Abroad registration appointments also appear in MySlice; under Enrollment Dates, see the appointment for “Flex Long Class.”
All Madrid students’ online registration appointments expire at 3:00 pm Eastern US time on Tuesday, November 19.
You should get online to register as soon as possible once your appointment starts. This will give you the best chance of getting your preferred course schedule. If you do not register during the online registration period November 13-19, our office will assist you with registering administratively from the classes still available at that time for the minimum 12 credits required to study abroad.
Sign in to OrangeAbroad. Your SUID number is located under Applicant Home > Profile Tab (left side).
If you cannot locate it, contact your Madrid International Program Advisor. You will need to provide some personal identification information (name, birthdate, SSN) in order for us to release this number to you.
Follow the instructions at the NetID Self-Serv portal.
Go to the NetID Self-Service portal.
Your NetID is what precedes @syr.edu in your Syracuse email address.
Our office does not place holds and thus lacks the authority to lift them. Here’s whom you should contact depending on the type of hold:
Advising holds (matriculated SU students only): Your home college
Bursar holds: Office of the Bursar at +1 315-443-2444
Other Financial Holds (Parking, Bookstore, Library, misc.): Office that placed the hold
Review STEP TWO: Get Ready.
You were emailed a copy of your CPF upon submission. Please check the email under which you submitted the form.
Yes, as long as you are eligible for it (for example, meet any prerequisite). Syracuse Abroad recommends you discuss any changes to your planned courses with your academic advisor(s).
You need to be available for the entire meeting time of each class. Select the course you most want to take. MySlice does not permit you to register for classes that have a direct time conflict.
Matriculated Syracuse students cannot register for a Spanish class unless
They have a Spanish class on their transcript, or
They have taken the online Spanish placement exam. Take it now to prevent snags in the registration process.
Short answer: Per Syracuse University Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics policy, no, not until you arrive in Madrid.
More thorough answer: Per policy, students without Spanish on their SU transcripts may not enroll in a course level different from their placement exam result. Further, students may not earn credit for a course that repeats prior study. Our office is not permitted to override these policies. But please don't worry! We can reassure you that:
When you arrive in Madrid, our Spanish faculty will assess your language level to make sure you're enrolled in the appropriate language class(es). If your professor determines your level needs to be changed, you will be able to swap to that level at that time.
If you're worried that your registered level will be too difficult but you've studied or spoken Spanish in the past,
You likely have greater aptitude than you think you do.
Living in Madrid is like being in a 24/7 language lab, so it's common to progress very quickly.
If you have AP or other transfer credit for a specific level of Spanish, you may not take that level again without forfeiting the credit. You should register for the next higher level of Spanish in Madrid.
Please see STEP FOUR: After Online Registration under "Spanish Registration" for more information.
As soon as your appointment allows! The earlier you get online to register for your classes abroad, the better your chances of getting into your first-choice courses.
Find your individual registration start time initially in OrangeAbroad under Online application checklist > Registration Appointment and Instructions. (Later, find it under Completed Requirements.)
You can also find your Madrid registration appointment in MySlice > "Enrollment" tile > Enrollment Dates on the "Flex Long" line.
Log in to MySlice [Student Home] > Enrollment > Enroll/Drop/Adjust Classes. You can find detailed instructions on how to register in STEP THREE: Register!
Do not use CLASS SEARCH! Do not use the SCHEDULE BUILDER! These are by far the most common errors made during online registration for Syracuse Abroad classes. Instead, enter the five-digit class number associated with each class (see next question).
You can find the five-digit class numbers (highlighted in yellow or green) on the updated Schedule of Classes.
If your account was not subject to a hold, our office has administratively enrolled you in CAS 200.
We will administratively enroll you in your Signature Seminar after online registration concludes.
Internship courses are not registered online; placements are not confirmed until after students arrive abroad.
Students taking classes at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid enroll in UAM classes in a separate process.
All Madrid students must register for at least 12 credits to meet the minimum required by the program and Spanish immigration.
The system will prevent you from registering for more than 17 credits. Please contact the Academic Services Team ASAP before online registration begins if you need to register for more than 17.
Remember, the following do not count toward your 12-credit minimum:
Your Signature Seminar course
Online credits with a Main Campus or College of Professional Studies instructor
Independent study or experience credit with a Main Campus sponsor.
On occasion, a course may be canceled due to insufficient interest or a meeting time changed due to circumstances outside Syracuse Abroad’s control. Canceled courses and schedule changes are listed in STEP ONE: Review Updates.
Check the Schedule of Classes. If the course subject and catalog number are highlighted in green, this is a cross-listed course that is registered under a different subject. It is the same class. A single class number for all prefixes allows for the maximum number of available seats for the class.
You will be able to change your registration to your preferred subject prefix once you get to Madrid so you will earn the credits under the correct academic department.
Some classes have seats reserved for specific populations (e.g., certain majors). If this is the case, although you will see that seats remain open, they are available only to specific populations.
If you don’t meet the criteria for enrollment, MySlice will indicate to you that the class is full.
Select an alternative course. Continue to to attempt to register for your preferred course throughout your registration appointment.
Yes. All students must take a minimum of 12 credits taught in Madrid to comply with both our program and Spanish immigration requirements. If you need to take an online course to stay on track for graduation, please email our office.
During online registration, the maximum registration limit is 17 credits (not including the Signature Seminar).
Please note that if you are registered for any credits over the amount of 19 (including your 3-credit Signature Seminar), those credits count toward your total semester credits and are subject to additional per-credit tuition charges. For detailed information, see the latest Tuition, Fees, and Related Policies Bulletin.
Review the information in STEP TWO: Get Ready under the CHECK PREREQUISITES subheading and follow the process.
If you can’t register for a course that is currently in your Shopping Cart, first try removing it from your cart and then re-add it.
If you continue to have problems, review the Troubleshooting page and this video on Common Enrollment Error Messages. If this doesn’t address your problem, email the Academic Team with the error message you receive and screenshots.
MySlice generates an alert (an exclamation point) to flag when two classes are close together in time. This is simply for your information. Most classes overseas meet in the same building, so a five-minute break between them is not a problem.
MySlice will not allow you to register for classes with actual time conflicts.
Do not email the professor of the class or the SU department! They cannot waive you into a class.
Review the information in STEP FOUR: After Online Registration under "Verification of a NEEDED course" and follow the process.
Make any changes you want during the registration period. Once online registration closes on Tuesday, November 19 at 3 p.m. Eastern US time, you will not be able to make changes to your schedule online until the Schedule Adjustment period opens in January.
See STEP FOUR: After Online Registration under the "Schedule Adjustment" heading.
Our office may remove you from any class for which you are deemed ineligible (you don’t meet the minimum GPA requirement, don’t meet the prerequisite, registered for more than one restricted PSY class, etc.). Syracuse Abroad makes every attempt to notify students by their syr.edu email before processing an administrative drop, so be sure to regularly read your syr.edu messages, or forward your messages to an email account you have regular access to.
