Geology is the science of the physical structure, composition and history of the earth and the processes that act on it. Geology is an integrated science and it involves the understanding and application of physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and astronomy. But unlike most of the other sciences, geology has an extra dimension, that of time—billions of years of it.

Geologists possess the knowledge and skills to interpret rocks, fossils and minerals and use this evidence to reveal the story of our planet. In turn geologists use the evidence of past events and processes to predict the future phenomena, such as tectonic activity, climate change and natural hazards.

Geology has numerous applications (see below). It is about understanding the evolution of life on Earth; about discovering resources such as metals and energy; about recognizing and minimizing the environmental implications of our use of those resources; about learning how to mitigate the hazards related to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and slope failures and it is about how engineers use rock formations and natural landscapes to design and construct our building and transport infrastructure.

Metamorphic Rocks
Petrology is the branch of geology that studies rocks and the conditions under which they form. Petrology has three subdivisions: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary petrology. Igneous rock are formed by the cooling of magma or the consolidation of volcanic ash. Metamorphic rocks are formed deep within the earth by intense heat and pressure. Sedimentary rock are formed by the consolidation of sediment.
