Teaching and Learning
All aspects of the teaching and learning of geology is planned and implemented to make the subject enjoyable and promote a perception of success amongst the students. Students have access to well-designed learning booklets for each topic. These contain a syllabus summary, text and case study information, diagrams and photographs, questions, problem solving activities, flipped learning opportunities and self-evaluation and target setting opportunities. The high expectations of student achievement is checked throughout the course by frequent teacher assessment and self-assessment activities that allow students to evaluate their performance confidently.

Throughout the course students will develop through critical practice the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods as applied in geology through a practical endorsement (see below) to develop competence and confidence in selecting, using and evaluating a range of quantitative and qualitative skills and approaches, (including observing, collecting and analysing geo-located field data, and investigative, mathematical and problem solving skills).

Final grade assessment in geology A level is entirely exam based. Students sit three exams at the end of the two year course.

In order to achieve the additional practical and field skills endorsement learners are required to complete 20 laboratory based practicals and four days of fieldwork.
