The Meranti Project is a developmental programme for all student-teachers in NIE to gain better awareness of themselves and reaffirm our teaching philosophies.
It was specially designed to be highly experiential in nature, allowing its participants to share their personal aspirations and express their opinions in an open and creative environment.
The Meranti Project is named after the Meranti tree, a rainforest tree which is native to Singapore and the region. This magnificent tree is used as a metaphor for an effective teacher. It is envisioned that student-teachers emerging from the Meranti experience will carry with them resilience and hope, and help provide a conducive environment for their own students to thrive and grow.

Upon completing our 2-days programme, alongside our facilitators, Carina and Hiromi, we left the TR with new perspectives and insights.
To have heard personal sharings from 16 other student-teachers, it made me feel heartened to have so many like-minded individuals in NIE. Their sharings also helped me to reflect and provided new perspectives for me to explore.
All in all, the Meranti Project has helped me to grow, in the short duration of 2-days, as a student-teacher, and made me reflect on why I chose teaching in the very first place. It helps me set clear goals and direction, in order to stay grounded and always be reminded of why I started.
