Class Requirements

Introduction to Health Careers, Body Systems and Disorders and Community Health Worker

2023-2024

All three classes are college preparatory courses with A-g credit in the G, elective category. They are all designed to teach you important information and skills for any patient care career. This gives you a head start when you go into your college program to get certified for your chosen health career. You will be learning professional skills, medical terminology, job seeking skills, and how to contribute to your community no matter which class you are in.

Course Requirements

The following are the requirements for the Health Career class for the portion of the year that we are using distance learning. As we progress to a blended classroom or back to in classroom learning later in the year, these requirements may change.  I will try to point out as we go where the differences are so you don't have to wonder about it so much.

Class Materials

You definitely need your Chromebook to be charged and ready to go each day.

In grades 11 and 12, you will need either a watch with a second hand or an app for your phone that has an analog clock.

A notebook for keeping notes organized. These are for your reference and study and will not be collected most of the time .

Classwork and Homework (50% of your grade)

You must complete all work and turn it in on time to earn the best grade possible. Late work will only receive 50% credit based on the points for the completed, graded assignment.

Expect the work for this class to take around 2 hours per week outside of the school day.

I know English, Math, History and Science generally have more homework so my only homework will be the work you do not finish during our class time each day, studying for tests and group work projects.

Most assignments will be posted on Google Classroom this year. Please check this site daily for assignments and due dates. Work will be turned in the Google Classroom the majority of the time. In some cases, we may use an app such as Nearpod where you have to put your answers onto the slides or the online text book which is interactive for sophomores and juniors.

Notes are expected to be copied by hand and not just printed. The action of hand writing has been shown to be a better strategy for adding to your memory than copying and pasting online.

Major Assignments, Tests and Quizzes (20% of your grade)

Major assignments, tests and quizzes will make up around 20% of your grade. Major assignments, projects or tests will be at the end of each chapter or unit. Quizzes can be given at any time but usually you do have notice at least the day before.  Paying attention and keeping up with your work will help you on the tests and quizzes.

At the end of each semester there will be a cumulative exam. Keeping organized notes and a Google Docs file for this class may be helpful when it comes time to study for this test.

Community Service and Professionalism (20% each)

During our time of distance learning Community Service will be done as full class projects. They will need to be activities that do not required in person contact but still benefit the community. I am looking for service ideas that will contribute to public health in our area so if you have ideas, let me know.

As the Health Academy Program is training you to be a healthcare professional, we do have professional standards and you will get a daily grade for professionalism.  This grade will be based on your attendance in zoom meetings, being on time to the meetings and participating in classes, discussions and other activities. If we are able to see each other, I also expect you to be dressed according to the district dress code. In discussions you should be polite and have good online etiquette. A requirement we have had in past years that I will not be enforcing during distance learning is the natural hair color requirement. If having blue, green or purple hair will help you feel happy during this time of staying at home, go for it. Once we are back in the classroom and volunteering in the community we will go back to the natural hair color rule.

Grade Calculation

Grades will be calculated using a weighted system this year.  Remember, points in each area add up. When  you decide to skip assignments because they are not worth many points, you are choosing to decrease your grade.

Please go to this Beginning of Year Survey to give me contact information and let me know you have read this information.
