World Language Offerings

Students must earn 1 credit of World Language OR 1 credit of Career and Technical Education to earn a South Carolina Diploma.

Those wishing to attend a four-year college or university must earn at least two credits of the same world language. Some institutions require three credits. Talk to your counselor to plan accordingly.

All Spanish courses are performance-based in three modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational. Learners accomplish real-world communicative tasks in culturally appropriate ways as they gain familiarity with products, practices, perspectives, and interactions of and within Spanish-speaking culture. By the end of this course, students should be able to: Understand, while listening or reading, words, phrases, sentences related to everyday life, recognize pieces of information and sometimes understand the main topic of what is said or read, communicate and exchange information about familiar topics in everyday situations using phrases and simple sentences sometimes supported by memorized language, orally present basic information on familiar topics using practiced language in the form of phrases and simple sentences, write lists and memorized phrases on familiar topics, identify some products and practices of Spanish culture, identify some basic cultural beliefs and values, and function at a survival level in an authentic cultural context.

At the honors-level, students are expected to complete more advanced work in preparation for ongoing study of the Spanish language at the college level. By the end of this course, students should be able to: Understand the main idea in messages and presentations on a variety of topics related to everyday life and personal interest and studies, understand the main idea of conversations, understand main idea of short and simple texts when the topic is familiar, participate in conversations on a number of familiar topics using series of sentences, handle short social interactions in everyday situation by asking and answering a variety of questions, present information on familiar topics using connected sentences, write briefly on familiar topics using connected sentences, identify common patterns in the products and practices of Spanish culture, begin to compare familiar cultural beliefs and values, and begin to interact at a functional level in familiar cultural context. Because this is an honors course, students will work at an Intermediate Low or Intermediate Mid level more than 50% of the time throughout the course.

Note: If the student fails the first semester of this course, it is recommended that a conference be held with the student, parent, and guidance counselor in order to continue into the second semester.

This course follows the curriculum prescribed by the College Board and is intended to provide students with an intensive foreign language learning experience. Students will learn by immersion, requiring the exclusive use of Spanish in the classroom. A wide variety of authentic materials will be used in order to achieve mastery in listening and in reading. The student will have ample opportunities to practice and develop formal and informal registers of speaking and writing using universal themes, cultural situations, and varied discourses and settings, with the ultimate goal of preparing students to speak and write about issues of cultural and global importance in the Spanish speaking world. A diagnostic test as a means of determining students’ strengths and areas of weakness will be administered within the first two weeks of the school year in order to customize instruction. Students take the AP Spanish Language & Culture examination in May.
