STEM Offerings

Students at St. James High School have several outlets to pursue learning opportunities in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This wide variety of courses are offered at the college-preparatory, honors, and Advanced Placement levels. These high-interest subjects will help prepare students for additional study or employment after high school.

Under a district-led initiative, St. James is also able to offer students rigorous STEM coursework through Project Lead the Way. PLTW classes create an engaging, hands-on classroom environment and empower students to develop in-demand knowledge and skills they need to thrive in college and the workplace.

PLTW Introduction to Engineering Design Honors

The PLTW Introduction to Engineering Design curriculum introduces students to the principles and practices that professional engineers undertake on a daily basis. Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work.

PLTW Principles of Engineering Honors

Prerequisite: Introduction to Engineering Design Honors

In this course, students encounter problems that engage and challenge them explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials, and automation. Students develop skills in problem solving, research, and design while learning strategies for design process documentation, collaboration, and presentation.

PLTW Civil Engineering and Architecture Honors

Prerequisite: PLTW Principles of Engineering Honors

Students learn important aspects of building and site design and development. They apply math, science, and standard engineering practices to design both residential and commercial projects and document their work using 3D architecture design software.

PLTW Aerospace Engineering Honors

Prerequisite: PLTW Civil Engineering and Architecture Honors

In Aerospace Engineering Students explore the physics of flight and space through software simulations and hands-on experiences. They bring concepts to life by designing and testing an airfoil, propulsion system, and a rocket. Students learn how these concepts apply to a career in aerospace engineering and other engineering fields.
