Emilee's Story
I knew from the age of eight that I wanted to make a career out of doing hair. So naturally, when I toured Hays High School during my 8th grade visit, I immediately knew the cosmetology program was the right path for me. My entire education—including my kit and uniform—cost around $600. If I had gone to a traditional cosmetology school outside of Hays, that same license would’ve cost nearly $25,000. I’m incredibly grateful I was able to start my career debt-free; that decision truly accelerated everything for me.
After graduating, I apprenticed for nine months before joining a commission salon. Just three months in, I had built a full clientele and transitioned to renting a chair, which I did for two years. Even then, I knew I wasn’t done growing—owning a salon had always been the dream. I opened my salon, Blondee, just one week after turning 21. My very first hire was actually a fellow Hair by Hays grad who apprenticed with me for a few months and now thrives behind the chair at Blondee too.
