MRS. MYLES

My name is Jennifer Myles. This is my 11th year teaching elementary music, and my 7th year here at Harbins Elementary School. I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University of Georgia, where my primary instrument was French Horn.

My husband and I have been married for 7 years, and we currently live in Bethlehem with our two dogs, Scout and Bruce, and our daughter, Juliet. When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family, crafting, and cheering on the Dawgs!

My name is Allison Powell. This is my 11th year teaching elementary music, and my 7th year here at Harbins Elementary School. I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University of Georgia, where my primary instrument was Trombone.

My husband and I have been married for 8 years, and we currently live in Winder with our baby girl, Charlotte, and our fur baby, Bailey. When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family, running, crafting, Disney trips, and cheering on the Dawgs in Athens on Saturdays in the Fall!

Hispanic Heritage Month

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, our music classes are exploring the rich musical traditions and cultural contributions of Hispanic communities through engaging, grade-level activities. Here's how each grade is celebrating:

Kindergarten–2nd Grade: Performing Los Machetes, a traditional Mariachi folk song using rhythm sticks, and listening to music by Hispanic artists.
1st Grade: Playing the Mexican nursery rhyme game Cinco Ratoncitos and learning El Zapatero, a traditional rhyme.
2nd Grade: Reading Paletero Man and creating rhythm patterns inspired by popsicle flavors in both Spanish and English.
3rd Grade: Reading Federico and the Wolf, adding bilingual speech pieces, and composing rhythms and melodies using ingredients for Pico de Gallo.
4th Grade: Playing Agua de Limón, a Colombian playground game.
5th Grade: Playing Vamos a Jugar, a Spanish passing game, and reading Ada’s Violin, followed by performing a xylophone piece inspired by the story using found sounds.

These activities are designed to celebrate Hispanic culture through music, movement, literature, and creativity. Thank you for supporting our students as they learn and grow through these meaningful experiences!
