When we started the EPIC program, I saw an opportunity to shape education into the engaging program I wish I had when I was in high school. I love that we work with students to create the problem solvers of the next generation - including skills such as critical thinking, perseverance, and communication. I have seen such huge benefits from this program for the students. My oldest child is now enrolled in the program and I cannot think of a better place for her to enjoy her learning and develop the skills necessary for success.
EPIC was the best choice for my son's high school career. It offers him collaboration, hands-on cross curricular activities, organization, and the ability to explore and expand on his passion-engineering. My son was always a quiet and reserved child in the classroom. EPIC has helped build his confidence and ability to speak publicly in front of an audience. The program supports and backs up his ideas, and helps him see everyday things in new and exciting ways.
Abby was initially hesitant to apply for the EPIC program because she is not interested in a STEM career path. However, she took the plunge when learning that the engineering process will help prepare her for any career, as the basics are to identify a solution to a problem. She is a very artistic, creative, outside-the-box learner who tends to get bored in a traditional classroom. The hands-on, collaborative approach to learning that EPIC provides engages her and she is thriving in all of her classes. During the EPIC open house, parents were asked to write down one word that we hope our child gets out of the EPIC program. I wrote the word “confidence”. I can say that I have witnessed a 180 in Abby’s confidence level since she joined the EPIC program. I am positive that by the time she graduates, the EPIC program will have helped to prepare her for whatever life throws at her, and I am excited to see everything she can accomplish!
Right at the end of eighth grade, I went to freshman initiation. I was talking to some juniors who were in EPIC, and they told me that even if I wasn't for sure going into a STEM career I should do EPIC because it will give you skills that you can apply for the rest of your life. This has continued to be true all throughout high school. EPIC has taught me how to efficiently work on a team, critical thinking and problem solving skills, and a wide variety of skills that will help me in the future. My favorite part of EPIC is all of your classes are with a specific group of people, and there are projects that cross over all your classes. It's amazing to see your idea blossom into an actual prototype after all of your hard work. Anyone thinking about EPIC should do it because it will make your high school career so much more exciting, it makes you close to your peers, and it develops a tight knit group within EPIC where you will make many friends and open up an avenue to learn so much more.
Being a part of EPIC this year has been nothing but positive! The teachers are extremely caring, creative, and show nothing but support towards their students in academics, or otherwise. Rather than learning the textbook material, you really learn the concepts and get to apply it to real world situations. You’re constantly learning how subjects tie in with each other and frequently work with others. Going into the program, I had little to no experience in STEM classes, but have learned so much thanks to the program.
The EPIC program has challenged the traditional methods of teaching and learning. In this digital age, students have access to all the information and we teachers facilitate their ability to find, interpret, and apply information. Our students are worldly citizens who can effectively communicate and effect change. In the EPIC program we grow their knowledge holistically, while providing students freedom to explore their interests.
