The topic of detailed information about the Salem Plateau has been covered above and it is time to take up the topic of human connection to home. Some places within the Salem Plateau are wonders of the world. This may be obvious since the Ozark National Scenic Riverways and The 11 Point National River are there, but there are many smaller lands and places that have been set aside because they are of special ecological or geological significance. Many recreational users think that their outdoor recreation is the primary purpose of these lands. In Missouri there is a system of lands termed “Missouri Natural Areas” which are set aside for this ecological or geological significance. They are places where people may visit for a day or more, but they are managed as either unique or reference areas for the protection of their living and physical resources. They are areas that are set aside on Forest Service, National Park, State Park, Dept. Conservation, and even private lands. The Author does volunteer conservation field work on some of these lands and would like to share some photographs and information about them. They are all in the Salem Plateau or St. Francois Mountains. This section is not essential and may be skipped.
