Insurance (GAKKENSAI etc.)

1. "Gakkensai" (Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research)

Handbook for Enrollment

1-1 "Gakkensai" (Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research)

"Gakkensai" is an insurance that provides necessary benefits to students who suffer physical injuries during educational and research activities. Specifically, it covers physical injuries caused by "sudden and fortuitous accident of external origin in the course of educational and research activities." Please note that "illness" shall not be covered.

In addition, there is an insurance called "Futaibai" (Liability Insurance coupled with "Gakkensai") in case you have caused injuries or damages to third parties.

All students in Faculty of Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, and Graduate School of IST are covered by "Gakkensai" and "Futaibai". There is no need to apply and pay for them, as the University of Tokyo covers them for students.

Since the university is in charge of the insurance application process, no individual insurance policy will be issued. Please keep the booklet "Handbook for Enrollment" as a substitute for the insurance policy. It can also be downloaded from the Gakkensai website (Japanese only).

1-2 Types of Courses, Claims and Scope of Compensation

Courses of Insurance for the students in Faculty of Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, and Graduate School of IST are as follows. Coverage can be found in the booklet "Handbook for Enrollment" or website of Insurance Company (Japanese only).

1-3 Proof of Insurance Coverage

Insurance Certificates may be required for practical training at external institutions, participation in internships, etc.  All students in Faculty of Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, and Graduate School of Information Science and Technology are covered by "Gakkensai" and "Futaibai", so no insurance certificates for students are issued. (Consultations are available depending on the situation.)

Instead, you can prove that you are covered by insurance by attaching a "Certificate of Enrollment" (available from Certificate Issuing Machines) to the following Explanatory Document for Gakkensai and Futaibai Insurance.

2. Other Insurance

2-1 Insurance for accidents at home or in daily life outside of the educational and research environment which are not covered by Gakkensai

There is a type of insurance called Comprehensive Insurance for Students Lives Coupled with "Gakkensai" (known as: "Futai-gakuso"). This additional coverage is optional. (The payment of the premium is the responsibility of the student who wishes to take out this insurance.)

In addition, when applying for other student insurance, it is advisable to know the coverage of Gakensai in advance to avoid wasting premiums.

2-2 Insurance for International Students

2-3 Insurance for Overseas Activities

Even in overseas educations and research activities, including study abroad and conference presentations, "Gakkensai" covers part of them, but is still insufficient because it does not compensate for illnesses or externally caused accidents. Please be sure to take out overseas travel insurance separately from Gakkensai.

The University of Tokyo's " International Crisis Management Manual" also provides information on the various insurance policies. Referring to such materials, we recommend that you take out insurance with adequate coverage to prevent the various risks of having a financial loss risen due to unforeseen events like accidents, medical emergency, etc.

If you participate in an overseas study program offered by the University of Tokyo, you may be required to take out an overseas travel insurance coupled with Gakkensai called "Futai-Kaigaku (Study Abroad Insurance)". The expense required for the insurance is to be borne by students themselves. You may also be required to take out insurance other than Futai-Kaigaku.

It is essential to take out overseas travel insurance, but the University of Tokyo does not recommend any one insurance in particular. If you are not specifically instructed by your overseas study program to purchase a specific insurance, you must find and apply for an overseas travel insurance policy on your own. The university co-op offers insurance for overseas travel and studying abroad. Please see below.
