Math: Multiplication & Division. We will begin this unit by learning a variety of problem solving strategies. We will use arrays, area models, number lines, skip counting, equal groups, repeated addition/subtraction. The students will demonstrate their understanding of each strategy but, they will also be able to choose one strategy that they like the most to carry them through the rest of this unit.
Science/Social Studies: Physical Characteristics. We will start this month by learning how to read a map and the different parts of a map. We will then learn how to use a map to view landforms and transition into learning about the different landforms and climates.
The new year has arrived so fast! We will hit the ground running when we return this month. We will start preparing for the STAAR test with practice tests this month. These will be used as an opportunity to gain familiarity with the routines of STAAR days. This will be a similar process to our practice tests in November.
We will also continue our STAAR prep by practicing STAAR type questions that will be sprinkled in throughout the month. This will help them learn how to read those questions, understand grade level vocabulary, and justify their answers.
You do not need to stress about prepping your students for the STAAR test at home. I assure you that they will do everything they need to do at school and I wouldn't want to over work them. This biggest part about taking their first STAAR is encouraging them to be confident, give their best effort that day, and use the strategies they have learned. We start preparing them this early to slowly build their confidence and it almost always works :)

Unit 6 - Multiplication and Division
TEKS 3.4 D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K and 3.5 B, C, D, E, and 3.6 C,D
This is a big unit for students! We introduce the concepts of multiplication and division. Students are expected to identify and use models to help them solve problems. We also introduce standard algorithm for solving multiplication problems with two and one digit numbers.
