In order for you to be successful as you progress into upper grades, you need to have a solid understanding of the concepts of addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as be fluent in the thinking strategies necessary in order to solve such facts.
Students should recall basic facts to add and subtract within 20 with automaticity and recall facts to multiply up to 10 by 10 automatically and recall the corresponding division facts. There is a researched progression students naturally follow in order to get a deep and intrinsic understanding of how to apply the fact strategies.
Fluency – Being able to recall basic math facts accurately and efficiently without a time restraint
Automaticity – Being able to recall basic math facts with speed
Memorization – Committing the math fact to memory
