When designing the Pete the Cat lesson plan above, Mrs. Rushing used observational data and teacher anecdotal data from the previous school year. Based on last year's data, there was a campus need to implement the zones of regulation schoolwide. Implementing and teaching about the zones of regulation also tied into our Essential 8 skill of self-management.
The Pete the Cat zones of regulation lesson also tied into a school wide implementation of the zones of regulation. Each classroom received zone posters for their classroom door and regulation station. Students could give the zone check poster a high-five to indicate how they were feelings as they walked in the door. In each regulation station, students could look to the zone poster to identify how they are feeling and choose a calm down strategy.
The zones of regulation guidance lesson was taken a step further and tied to regulation stations for each classroom. These regulation stations were private areas in the classroom in which students could go to self-regulate. Administration support was key in implementing this practice. Part of the school counselor budget was used to create regulation station boxes filled with fidgets. These boxes were checked in and out to teachers each year.
After self-management guidance lessons were delivered, students in grades Prek-3rd could be observed requesting to use their classroom regulation station.
Working with Stakeholders
The professional school counselor understands that a comprehensive school counseling program cannot flourish in isolation. Partnering with parents, community members, and staff is essential for student success. Guidance lessons plans are shared with staff and parents every month. Teachers can take this learning a step further and continue to discuss essential 8 themes in their classroom and in their morning meetings. Mrs. Rushing also communicates what students are learning in small groups to parents and gives suggestions for at home acitivites. All counseling related news is shared to the community in the Principal weekly smore. All communicated sent home to parents is provided in English and in Spanish.
This is an example of the parent letters I send out when students are in small-groups.
