Counseling Calendar
Linked below is the outline for guidance lessons, as well as schoolwide events. Half of the guidance lesson time is spent deliverying the lesson, and the other half is spent guiding the students through stations. These stations that help faciliate social skills and communication that align with the essential 8 topic of the month. Lastly, the counseling calendar includes a local college and career path of the month that is discussed on the morning announcements.
Guidance Highlight
One of Denton's Essential 8 themes is relationship skills. Students learn how to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy friendships. Part of being able to have healthy relationships skills is being able to navigate peer conflict. One example of a guidance lesson that centered around relationships skills was the peace path lesson (see picture to the bottom left). Before sending students off to practice solving fictional peer conflict situations, the counselor first modelled how to walk the peace path. Prior to learning about the peace path 80% of 1st grade behavior support calls were the result of peer conflict. After our peace path lesson, and the instillation of classroom peace paths, only 50% of support calls were the result of peer conflict.
Kindergarten through second grade classrooms use peace paths to talk through peer conflicts.
Guidance lessons combine district curriculum with hands on centers to facilitate social-emotional learning.
Students learn essential 8 character traits best when lessons are fun. Puppet shows, paired with bibliotherpay books, happen once a month.
Pre-K and kindergarten students learn empathy through Baby Doll Circle Time.
