Counselor's Role
The counselor's role is to support the SEL needs of the campus. At the heart of McNair's program is the idea that every student looks forward to coming to school. This is accomplished through maintaining a comprehensive counseling program. Mrs. Rushing works with students to remove emotional barriers to promote academic success.
Leadership and advocacy
The school counselor partakes in constant leadership and advocacy through system programming. Mrs. Rushing is in charge of leading staff trainings and supporting the implementation of school wide programs. For example, McNair elementary is excited to introduce students and staff to the Character Strong campus program in August 2024. Mrs.
Mrs. Rushing acts as an advocate for student and staff needs. She follows the framework of Maslow's hierarchy of needs to set students up for success. The school counselor is apart of the MTSS process and acts on behalf of the student.
August 2023 regulation station staff training
In the beginning of the school year, Mrs. Rushing trained the staff on how to use regulation stations. The training included modeling of regualtion station student procedures, as well as, a lesson on how regualtion in the brain is effected by trauma. At the end of the training, staff got to make their own glitter bottle and regulation station kit.
McNair Elementary welcomed the Character Strong morning meeting curriulum into classrooms for the 2024-2025 school year. Mrs. Rushing met with each grade level team individually to provide hands-on training. Administration supported the implementation of Character Strong by reserving time for morning meetings on each grade level's master schedule.
