McNair Elementary's sociol emotional learning program is in the early stages of implementation and development. The Counseling Advisory Council piloted one new SEL tool per month. Memebers implemented the tool with fiedlity for one month, and then provided their feedback to the school counselor. The data collected was used to plan for preventive SEL tools/practices that will be mandatory for the 2024-2025 school year.
Implementation Cycle
At the last meeting of the year, the CAC reviewed the needs assessment and gave feedback to be used in designing the following year’s annual plan. (See below)
Organizing: Organizing for the upcoming school year begins at the end of May. Administration and Mrs. Rushing meet to redefine professional roles and discuss improvements for the upcoming year. With a vision in mind, Mrs. Rushing sends out a comprehensive needs assessment to staff. This data will serve as a roadmap for the school year.
Planning: The CAC gave feedback on which SEL pratices and tools would be implemented for the upcoming school year. The CAC also meets at the end of every school to plan for counseling changes for the upcoming school year. We examine how the professional school counselor's time is being spent and how we can ensure that we become even more comprehensive. Mrs. Rushing also sits down in the beginning of the year to create guidance lesson and school wide program pacing guides.
Designing: The overall design of the school counseling program is heavily based on the Texas counseling school model. Majororty of the counselor's time is spent in guidance lessons and preventative services. The rest of the time is allocated between academic needs and responsive services. The school counseling program design is also influeced by the student body population. McNair's large emerging bilingual population requires the counseling program be designed to be 100% acessible in English and in Spanish.
Implementing: Implementing a comprehensive school counseling program is a team effort. Mrs. Rushing's role was to carry out services via small groups, individual sessions, whole group guidance lesson, responsive services, and other various school wide events. The counseling advisory committee worked to implement SEL and restorative practices in the classrooms. McNair students were encouraged to practice the social skills they learned in guidance by working to earn Commander Kudos for their kind actions. Lastly, administration provided support, collaboration, and the financial means to further develop the program.
Evaluating: The counseling advisory committee evaluted the effectivness of the counseling program via staff surveys on google forms and SEL tool evaluations via google spreadsheets. Mrs. Rushing compared attendence, disciplinary, and program service data from prior school years to current day. Factors such as race, gender, grade level and economic barriers were taken into account. All the data that was gathered will help McNair improve their comprehensive counseling program and plan for the following academic school year.
