In Unit 7 we are going to be looking at motion graphics and visual effects. We will be researching, planning, and creating our own motion graphics which are relevant to climate change and help to develop skills in After Effects and Premiere Pro. By the end of this unit I aim to have learnt how to create visual effects and to have used the green screen to create a video relevant to climate change.
When I make my own motion graphic based on climate change, I am aiming to include animated text similar to the Spotify motion graphic, which I really liked. I would also like to layer objects in the front and back like the Fanta motion graphic, however I am not sure if that will be too difficult or not.
The aspect of climate change I would like to focus my motion graphic on is either fast fashion or deforestation.
Here are some examples of motion graphics I found on YouTube for some companies I like. I like the Spotify motion graphic because the words appear one by one which I think is captivating for the audience as it is easier to read quickly and they will want to keep reading because they're only seeing one word at a time. The music is in time with when each word appears which I think makes it more enjoyable to watch.
I like the Nike motion graphic because the shoes are 3D which adds dimension to the video and helps the audience visualise the shoe better. I also like how they included information about the shoes and I just think the animation is cool.
I like the Fanta motion graphic because there are lots of layers of objects which makes it 3D and interesting. I like the colours used as they are very bright and colourful. I like how the fanta is falling with oranges around it, but the fanta can is the main focus. I think this is cool because the colours and fruit are representative of the drink and are eyecatching.
On Pexels I found some videos based on climate change that I could use for my own motion graphic. I could use a green screen to have someone standing in the flood panicking or stood under the sun sweating because the planet is heating up. For the melting ice video they could be sat on the ice berg upset because the ice is melting. Out of these ideas I think I am going to aim for the video with the sun and have my friend there acting really hot and flustered. I have chosen to do this because it is easy to do with just a green screen and requires no budget. I would be able to do it within the time we have because the only thing I need is the green screen and the actor.
We recorded the footage for our motion graphics in the green screen studio. I asked a classmate to pretend to be really hot and sweaty. This is the raw footage before I have added the background video. This went successfully and smoothly and only took us about a minute to film so it was easy to do.
I edited the clips together in Premiere Pro to remove the green screen using ultra key. I adjusted the position of the actor over the background video and colour corrected both videos to match each other more. I also increased the orange tint to demonstrate that the actor is boiling hot in the sun.
To add the steam graphic, I imported it into the sequence and used ultra key to remove the green screen. I then reduced the illumination to make it more grey to represent the burning from the heat.
This is my final edit of the green screen motion graphic. I am satisfied with the finished project.
We have been tasked to create a short video that demonstrates motion and camera tracking. I will be using After Effects to do this and my climate change poster from Unit 6.
I found a video of a graffitied alleyway on Pexels where the camera slowly moves down the street. I put my poster on the wall and used camera tracking on the pexels video so it would stay in the same place as the camera moves. I adjusted the size, angle and position of the poster on the wall until I was pleased with the results.
We learnt how to create and animate a 3D object from a photo. I downloaded a texture of a planet from Solar Textures | Solar System Scope and the texture of clouds from storm_clouds_8k.jpg (8192×4096) (shadedrelief.com) I used After Effects to turn the planet texture into a sphere and I animated the rotation of it to spin continuously. I then added a background underneath the planet from |https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1509773896068-7fd415d91e2e?q=80&w=1000&auto=format&fit=crop&ixlib=rb-4.0.3&ixid=M3wxMjA3fDB8MHxzZWFyY2h8Mnx8bmlnaHQlMjBza3l8ZW58MHx8MHx8fDA%3D. This went successfully and I think I picked it up quite quickly.
We have been tasked to create a short visual effect of a floating object by removing a wire. I am going to use a video from Pexels and edit in After Effects.
Below is the original video from Pexels and screenshots of the editing process.
Here is the finished edit of the video:
We were first given the task to create a green screen video that links to climate change using the green screen in the studio. I found a few background videos that relate to weather and climate change but I decided to focus my video on the rising temperature of the planet so I used the video of the tree in the sun. I asked a classmate to act hot and sweaty on the green screen which went well on the first shoot. With this footage I used Premiere Pro to use ultra key to change the green screen to the video of the tree in the sun. I then made adjustments to the video of the actor to make the colour schemes and warmth of the videos match. After that I added a green screen visual graphic from pexels of what looks like steam/smoke to depict the grass burning from the sun's heat. I think this part of the unit went well as my green screen was successful and my video demonstrates an aspect of global warming the way I wanted it to and conveys this to the audience.
The next task I was given was to use my poster from Unit 6 to create a video using motion tracking. I downloaded a video of a street with walls. I used After Effects to track the motion and make it so the poster sticks t o the wall as the camera moves down the street. This was successful and relatively easy to do once I was shown.
The third task of the unit was to create a 3D object and animate it using After Effects. We were supplied with a website where we could download 2D textures of different planets. I downloaded the mercury texture along with a texture from google images of clouds from space. In After Effects I layered the clouds texture and the planet texture to create a new planet texture. Then I used the CC Sphere tool to transform the texture into a spherical shape and animated the rotation of the planet to make it look like it was spinning. I downloaded an image of a starry sky over a lake and layered the planet animation on top of it to complete my video. I am pleased with the outcome however there could be a slight improvement made to the lining up of the edges of the texture with more practise and understanding of the tools.
For the final task, we had to create a visual effect of an object floating by removing the wire. I used After Effects and used the simple wire removal effect. From there I adjusted the wire removal frame by frame making sure the wire wasn't showing. This went well and I picked it up quickly but I think I do need some practice as it is not perfect. Despite this I am still happy with it because my aim was to make the wire disappear and I achieved that.
Overall all my projects worked well and I am satisfied with the results in comparison to my intentions and I think I communicated to the audience what I wanted to get across about climate change in each of the tasks.
