In this unit, we will be looking at climate change, and I will be researching aspects of it which interest me. By the end of this unit, I'm aiming to have researched and created a poster about climate change which effectively informs people about the issue.
I like this image of ice melting, as it is something that seems small but actually it is very important and bad for our planet. I think this makes it interesting as it has a deeper meaning than what you can see.
I also like this image because the smoke from the factories is really dark and thick, which makes it seem dangerous and scary. This means that the people who see this photo might realise how much of an effect this smoke actually has on the world.
This image really stood out to me because it has a powerful message. I like the contrasting images of the ruined, polluted Earth and the bright, healthy Earth. I think this is really effective as it shows people what our planet should be like in comparison to what it is becoming. I think this image serves as a wakeup call for those who don't realise the damage we have done to the planet.
This image of a polar bear is good because it makes you feel sympathy for the polar bear because he is isolated on a piece of ice in the middle of the sea. This image targets people who like and care for animals by making them feel sad for the polar bear.
This image of a burning Earth caught my eye. I like how it is a metaphor for what our planet is becoming, and the idea of fire, burning and destruction could be shocking and scary for someone to think about, especially if they know it is their planet. I also like the bright colours, as it emphasises the two sides of the planet and makes it stand out.
Following my research, I have learnt that when I make my own poster, I should use imagery to induce emotions as that is what has caught my eye while researching images. I would also like to include a quote about climate change; for example "there is no planet B". I like this quote as it is play on words of the phrase "plan B". This is clever as most people have heard that phrase before and know that it means this is our only option. This can be worrying for people as it suggests we have nowhere to go if this planet is destroyed. I also am aiming to include a metaphoric image to get a point across because I can then present my message in more interesting and unique ways which make people think about it more. Furthermore, if I put a quote over the image or just text, I want it to be bold and stand out so the importance of the message is more significant and emphasised. I think I will focus my poster on images of nature and our natural environment.
For my climate change poster I would like to focus it on nature and how it is affected by climate change. The UK is becoming more and more rainy due to climate change, so I think the location of my photoshoot could be a outside on a rainy day. This would be easily accessible and I dont think I want to include any props. I am intending on doing a split photo of a building or street in Bath, one side sunny and one side raining, similar to the third image I put in my research. On a day when the sun is shining, I can take photos of one half of a street in Bath so I can mirror it and take pictures of the other half when it is raining. This image represents how the weather is changing for the worse, and this is relatable because we dont wan't the weather to get worse.
Shot List
one half of the street on a rainy day
the other half of the street on a sunny day
The image to the right is really helpful because it tells you the styles of each font and how they look. I think I will use a modern and simple font because it looks sophisticated and I dont want my poster to feel too crowded. I have also learnt that posters should include a variety of serif and sans-serif fonts to draw attention and make the words stand out more. I am going to do this on my poster.
I found this image of a colour wheel, which helps me understand complementary colours so I can see what colours will make the poster stand out most. In my research I found out about different colours representing different emotions. For example, red and orange represent anger, blue represents sadness and green and yellow represent positive emotions. Green and red are opposite on the colour wheel, so they would be good to use together to create contrast.
Since doing research, I have changed my plan for my photoshoot slightly. Instead, I have decided to take a photo of a flower that is blossomed, and then the same flower but dying. This will be a split photo again, making it look like one flower but with two different sides to it.
Here are some examples of what I am aiming to do. On top of my photo I will take, I will be adding text such as a quote or a warning about climate change in order to make it into a poster. I am also planning on editing each side of the photo to emphasise each half of the flower. For example on the dead side I will make it dark and dull and on the alive side I will make it brighter and more colourful.
This photograph I took in my garden of a single rose. I like this photo as the rose looks very pretty and I like how blurred the background is.
This photo is of a very vibrant flower I found while out. I really like this because the flower is really bright and the colour is nice, and it has a blurred background.
This photo is of a pink rose I also found while out. I like how this photo has the contrast of the alive and bright rose and then the dead rose, as this is what I was aiming to do.
This is my final poster based on climate change. Overall I am happy with the way it turned out as the message I wanted to put out was successfully done. I designed my poster in PhotoShop and I decided to use the second picture I took from my photoshoot because the colour of the flower creates the most contrast when the background is put in black and white. To make the background black and white and leave the flower in colour, I selected the shape of the flower and deleted it from the photo, which I made black and white. I then imported the same photo with its colour and cut out the flower again and deleted the background. After that I moved the flower over where the original photo's flower had been removed. It took me a while to figure out how to do this but I worked it out in the end. I did this combination of greyscale and colour because it represents how our planet is slowly dying and being ruined and we need to stop killing flowers because they're good for the world and look nice. I included the quote "let's make the world colourful again" to represent how many beautiful flowers are dying because of climate change. I made "colourful" a serif font and the colour green to represent the meaning of the word and to make it stand out from the others as it is the important part of the quote. At the bottom of the poster I found a statistic from The Guardian that will shock an audience as it is a scary fact and tells us time is running out so we must act now. My final design did differ from my plans, but I like the way it turned out. For example in the beginning I wanted my poster to be about the weather in a city, and then I was aiming to do a split photograph of a flower half dead, but I could not find any around at this time of year. Because of this I adapted my approach and went with this idea instead, however I am very happy with it. If I were to do this again I would take more time to do my photoshoot so I can make sure I get all the photos I initially wanted to take.
