BDC ONLINE
It’s an opportunity for students to explore the rich cultural heritage, learn about influential figures, and reflect on the struggles and triumphs of the Black community. At Barking & Dagenham College, we encourage everyone to engage in events, discussions, and activities that promote understanding, inclusion, and pride in Black history. Together, let’s recognize the importance of Black history in shaping the world we live in today.
Black History Month was founded by Ghanaian-born Akyaaba Addai-Sebo in 1987, is a time to recognize the rich contributions of Black people to British society in fields like art, music, science, and literature. Inspired by the USA's February Black History celebrations, UK BHM takes place in October, a traditional time for African leaders to gather, symbolizing reconnection with African roots. This month also provides an early opportunity for schools to explore Black history, while addressing the historical discrimination and mistreatment Black people have faced.
