Captains are the bridge between the entire squad and the coaches. They are responsible for communicating with all program athletes and coaches. They must complete and stay on top of all co-captain responsibilities. They can be removed from the position at any point by the coaches if they fail to uphold the expectations of the program, school, district, and/or state.
Captain Selection Process:
Application: Any eligible athlete may submit a formal "Captain Nominee Form" and be considered for the position. They must have good citizenship and be in good standing from past seasons and in classes. They should also be academically eligible for the honor roll and have a minimum of 90% attendance.
Application due date: 3/6/2026
Interview: Interested candidates will participate in a formal interview with the coaching staff to discuss their vision for the team and how they plan to uphold the program's mission.
Interview scheduled for: 3/9/2026
Coach Nomination: The coaching staff will review all applications & interviews and select the candidates who best meet the program's standards of leadership, citizenship, and academic performance.
Coaches will select the campaigning captains by 3/10/2026
Captain-Campaign: The selected captains will have the MSHSAA period to campaign for their spot as captain and demonstrate their readiness to take on the responsibilities of the role.
Campaigns will run from 3/10/2026-3/20/2026
Team Vote: The team will cast a secret ballot vote from the coaches' nominated candidates. The coaches will have the final say on any ties.
Team vote will take place on 3/20/2026 after practice, and Captains will be announced on 3/23/2026.
Co-Captains:
Senior Captain(s): Senior Captains serve as the primary team leaders, providing guidance and mentorship based on their experience in the program.
Junior Captain(s): Junior Captains serve as leaders-in-training, taking on responsibilities and preparing to lead the team in future seasons.
Responsibilities:
1. Leadership & Team Culture
Both Captains: Uphold and help teammates follow the Code of Conduct and STUNT Handbook. Give positive and constructive feedback to teammates and take feedback respectfully.
Senior Captains: Brainstorm and delegate new ways for the program to be involved in the school and community. Design, organize, and run end-of-season banquet/celebrations.
Junior Captains: Regularly check in with underclassman athletes to address any concerns or questions they may have.
2. Practices
Both Captains: Bring conditioning/team bonding ideas to the coaches for practices.
Senior Captains: Assist with Practice Ready Check: No jewelry, hair up, dressed appropriately, etc. Lead warm-ups using the prepared warm-up by the coaches: running, dynamic and static stretching, jumps/kicks, and drills. Lead stunt, jump, and tumbling warm-up
Junior Captains: Take attendance for the coaches and make a note of tardies and absences. Take responsibility for rotating who gets mats out and who puts mats away.
Important Note: NO stunting without a coach present!
3. Game Day
Both Captains: Create new traditions for the team throughout the season. Are the welcoming committee for away schools if we are hosting. Decide MVPs of the game
Senior Captains: Act as the point of contact for questions regarding the game on game day. Take attendance for the coaches and make a note of tardies and absences. Assist with Game Ready Check: No jewelry, hair up, and dressed appropriately. Lead the pre-game warm-up using the prepared warm-up by the coach. Lead marking and warming up quarters.
Junior Captains: Make sure all bags are appropriately placed. Make sure that no garbage is left behind. Close all the bus windows when getting off. Manage the secret siblings' gift exchange.
4. Administrative/Communication Responsibilities
Both Captains: Assist the coach with basic equipment inventory and report any issues or shortages. Send trends or other social media challenges to the coach to film. Send all spirit themes to the coaches to post on social media.
Senior Captains: Collect pictures and videos from practices and competitions and send them to the coach to post on social media platforms. Create promotional posters/stories for events. Prepare and distribute a weekly team update to teammates on upcoming practices, events, and games. Host captain meetings when applicable (1 per month minimum).
Junior Captains: Coming up with the monthly mentor check-ins with their assigned little siblings.
