Guidance for Remote learning with Zoom

Zoom is the video communication tool that we use in FUSD1. All students are Basic users with school associated usernames. Your student must use his/her school username in order to be identified by his/her teachers when waiting to attend the class call.

Can my student access their zoom account on different devices?

Students can access Zoom Class calls on their FUSD1 provided iPad, a desktop computer, or laptop.

> The iPad that your child is using had this app set up by the librarian. The student’s account has already been connected and all your child will have to do is click on the app. This will give him/her the opportunity to join the Zoom Class calls.

> Desktop Computer/Laptop: Students will have to be signed in to their school account in order to attend their class' Zoom. Their school account can be accessed using the SSO information (please see below).

Connecting to Zoom: What to do if you are not automatically signed in

To use the Zoom app, your student must be logged into his/her account by signing in. Occasionally, when your student’s iPad updates, Zoom requires students to sign back in. If and when this is the case:

  1. Your student must click on Sign In. This can be found at the bottom of the screen once your child opens the Zoom app.

  2. A pop-up window will open asking to sign in using SSO, with the word OK on the top right hand corner of the the pop-up window. Your child will click on the OK.

  3. This will direct the app to the Flagstaff Unified School District log in page. Your child will enter his/her student ID email, 12345678@fusd1.org, and the same password that he/she uses to sign into StudentVUE. Remember, this is the Single Sign-On password used for everything.

Once these steps are complete, your child will be signed into Zoom and he/she can be allowed into the Zoom Class call.

Why Was I kicked out of my Zoom?

There are two primary reasons why your child gets kicked out of Zoom:

1) The wifi connection that the iPad is connected to is not strong enough. This is especially true if there are several devices connected to the wifi and all trying to access different things at the same time. The signal that it is a connection issue is that the cursor or wheel just spins and spins. Finally an error code or message will appear on the iPad screen.

What to do: Remove some devices, put them into Airplane mode, and try to connect the iPad again. If there is still a problem with the wifi signal strength, you will need to go somewhere that you can access a stronger wifi connection. If that is not possible, please call the attendance line at 928-773-8260 and explain that you are having wifi connection issues and your child needs to be excused until the wifi connection is stronger.

2) Your student is not following protocols, Zoom Classroom rules and routines established by the teacher. Teachers do not want to remove students from a Zoom class because they will not be able to return to the class until the next day. This very rarely occurs. Please contact your child’s teacher directly to have a conversation if you think that this has happened.

Zoom Updates

Since Zoom is the virtual communication tool that all of our district is using, the company is trying to always improve the quality of your child’s experience. This is why the app’s creators are constantly pushing out updates for their app. The updates are automatic and need to be allowed to finish. If an update occurs during class time, please have your child email his/her teacher using StudentVUE or Canvas. Have your child explain that the Zoom app is updating and that they will join class as soon as the update is complete.

Video on During Class

We ask that students turn on their video during class so that their teacher can communicate with his/her students during class. It is very important that your child participates in the Zoom Class call and having the video on let’s the teacher see that they are present and participating. The teachers understand that there may be times to have the video feature off to conserve wifi strength. Please make sure that your child communicates this need with his/her teacher during that specific time.

Zoom Etiquette

During Remote Learning, Zoom Class calls are the only way that teachers and students can be together. Each teacher has established procedures and routines for students to follow while attending class in Zoom. Please make sure that your child is aware of and following the procedures and routines to make sure that he/she has the best possible learning experience. If there is any confusion about the procedures and routines, have your child reach out to his/her teachers to gain clarification.
