Social Emotional Professional Development 2023-2024
Trauma Informed Education and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) - What are they and how do they intersect? The purpose of the Trauma Informed Education and SEL PD is to support all staff (certificated and classified) in expanding their knowledge and capacity to support student learning by creating an environment focused on the student-staff relationship and equitable outcomes. Emphasis will be on 4 core areas:
How to deepen one's Self-Awareness, including strengths, implicit biases and triggers
How to create a trauma-informed classroom environment, recognizing the benefit for all students
How to teach core content more deeply, richer and in a mutli-dimensional way
How to teach SEL skills explicitly so students are able to internalize and develop them
Ability to highlight SEL concepts into the curriculum teachers already teach
Who: Certificated and Classified Staff who hope to learn how to create spaces and practices that create an environment conducive to learning for all.
Model: Two cohorts: each with one half-day session and two 90-minute follow up sessions. The cohort model is focused on building community to support each other in this transformative work.
Outcomes:
An understanding of the components of a trauma-informed classroom environment
Increased Self-Awareness of assets, challenges, and biases that impact student learning
How to teach core content more deeply, richer and in a mutli-dimensional way; integrate current TSEL into current curriculum - not stand alone lessons!
Mini “cycles of inquiry” between meetings to support learning and try practices
Ability to highlight SEL concepts into the curriculum teachers already teach
