🍀 Outdoor theater
Situated next to Weiwuying Metropolitan Park, this building's curved design flows from the ground to the roof, blending perfectly with the local breeze and scenery. The open areas provide stunning views of the sunset, and the seamless integration of curves and seating transforms the site into a unique, versatile space for the arts.
🍀Building appearance
荷蘭建築師 法蘭韾.侯班(Francine Houben)
Inspired by the local banyan trees, Dutch architect Francine Houben designed the fluid, streamlined form of the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts of Weiwuying. Spanning 9.9 hectares with a building footprint of 3.3 hectares, the center sits adjacent to the 47-hectare Weiwuying Metropolitan Park. This seamless integration with the lush greenery allows the theater and daily life to blend together effortlessly.
🍀Opera house
This opera house features Taiwan's largest automated stage, specifically designed for diverse multidisciplinary performances. Its horseshoe-shaped theater utilizes continuous horizontal seating to ensure fluid sightlines, while an 80-square-meter liftable orchestra pit accommodates full-scale orchestras for grand productions. Engineered by Dutch consultants and constructed by Austria's Waagner-Biro, the venue meets the highest international technical standards.
🍀Concert hall
This concert hall features a vineyard-style seating layout, bringing the audience closer to the performers while ensuring exceptional acoustics and sightlines. The main stage is equipped with 15 elevator platforms and adjustable acoustic reflectors to precisely optimize sound quality. It also houses Taiwan's largest pipe organ—handcrafted by Germany's Johannes Klais Orgelbau with 9,085 pipes—delivering a truly powerful audiovisual experience.
🍀Theater
Designed for drama and dance, this theater features interchangeable proscenium and thrust stages to enhance performer-audience interaction. The system—designed by Dutch consultants and built by Austria’s Waagner-Biro—integrates computer-aided lifts and removable seating, allowing for a flexible transition to a musician's area while maintaining an intimate performance atmosphere.
🍀Performance hall
Designed for chamber music, solo recitals, and small-scale performances, this hall features a traditional shoebox design with a central low wall to provide essential lateral sound reflections. The space utilizes perforated wood panels and adjustable acoustic curtains to fine-tune absorption levels, ensuring optimal acoustic clarity tailored to every performance.
🍀Banyan plaza
Banyan Plaza is a semi-outdoor public space connecting the performance halls, featuring a free-form curved surface designed like "tree holes." Utilizing shipbuilding techniques, the architecture evokes the imagery of cooling off under banyan trees. Inspired by the ancient banyan clusters at Weiwuying, architect Francine Houben created a sense of transparency and rhythmic "breathing" within the plaza, making it the very soul of the entire complex.
