Chenglan Emplacement
The former Fengshan County New City had six gates and six forts. Today, only the East Gate (Dongbianmen) and three fortsâChenglan, Pingcheng, and Xunfengâremain, all designated as the municipal monument âRemains of Fengshan County City.â
The Chenglan Fort, located behind Fengshan Elementary School at the intersection of Lizhi and Fuxing Streets, sits at the southwest corner of the old city. It features a polygonal design, with flanking walls preserving embrasures that are wider inside and narrower outside. From the top, visitors can look toward the former moat and enjoy a wide, open view of the surroundings.
Built in 1838 (the 18th year of the Daoguang era), Chenglan Fort served as a strategic stronghold at the southwest corner of Fengshan County New City. Its octagonal design was used to monitor the southern moat and defend against threats from the south. The walls feature embrasures that are narrow outside and wide inside, allowing both protection and a broad firing range. The name âChenglanâ symbolizes calming waves and maintaining peace, reflecting its role in Fengshanâs defensive system.

Historical Origins and Characteristics of the Cao Gong Temple
Cao Gong Temple honors Cao Jin, a Qing-era magistrate who improved irrigation by diverting water from the Gaoping River, earning deep public respect. Originally built in Fongyi Academy, the shrine was relocated in 1900 with support from Governor-General Kodama Gentaro and officially became Cao Gong Temple in 1992.

Behind Cao Gong Temple stands the Pingcheng fort, about five meters tall with a square shape and internal stairs leading to the top. A granite plaque on the front is inscribed with the characters âPingcheng.â Its solid structure still conveys the imposing presence of its former role in defending the city.

It once served as a key defensive stronghold for Hokkien and Cantonese immigrants and merchant ships, guarding the strategic passage from the Fengshan River to the Qianzhen River estuary. Today, the remaining fort still reflects its former appearance. Its semi-circular walls are built with coral stone and pebbles, with the âXunfengâ plaque embedded in the wall and flanked by decorative plaster scrolls, adding a touch of elegance to the sturdy structure.
Xunfeng fort, completed in 1838 during the Daoguang era, was a key defensive site built by Magistrate Cao Jin as part of Fengshan Countyâs new city. Located at the junction of the Fengshan River and the moat, it guarded the waterway from the Qianzhen River into the city. Its main role was to patrol merchant vessels, ensure the safety of immigrants, and maintain order in river trade.
