Fongyi Academy is one of the best-preserved Qing Dynasty academies in southern Taiwan, founded in 1814 during the Jiaqing era. It once served as a center for Confucian learning, education, and local administration, reflecting the scholarly culture of Fengshan.

Built in a traditional Minnan architectural style with courtyards and halls, it embodies Confucian values. After restoration, it has been transformed into a cultural park with exhibitions and activities that introduce academy life, the imperial examination system, and local history—making it an important site connecting Taiwan’s past and present.

Fongyi Academy was founded in 1814 after the destruction of Pingshan Academy during the Lin Shuang-wen rebellion, rebuilt by local officials and gentry to restore cultural life in Fengshan. In the Qing Dynasty, it functioned not only as a school but also as a place for worship, exams, administration, and military use. Over time it was repurposed and later covered by private buildings until being designated a monument in 1985 and fully restored in 2013. Today, it is Taiwan’s largest surviving Qing academy.
