Discipline in the Early Learning Center is based on a positive attitude toward children. The goal is for each child to become self-disciplined. ELC staff models respect and problem solving skills and specifically teaches regular lessons in grace and courtesy. Redirection and refocusing are used to help children learn acceptable behavior in school. Our goal is to prevent inappropriate behavior by providing clear expectations of behavior. Behavioral expectations are intentionally taught and modeled through daily lessons in grace and courtesy.
ELC staff work hard to create a prepared environment that has all of the materials necessary for every lesson the child will need each day. The lessons are organized and neatly presented so that the children and the teacher can easily access the materials as needed. Children have the choice to work with the materials that they find interesting and meaningful. Unless a child is being dangerous, disruptive or disrespectful with materials, peers or staff, each child has the freedom to choose his/her work. This choice is what helps to empower the children to take responsibility for their own education and learning.
Appropriate communication is stressed at all times. ELC staff assists each child in building the skills necessary to control his/her own actions. We do not believe in adult threats of reward or punishment. Natural consequences are used as a means of helping the child to develop inner limits. If a child is disruptive or endangers him or herself or others, staff will intervene to keep all of the children safe. Expectations will be clarified and if necessary, the child will be asked to temporarily remove him/herself from the group. If persistent breakdowns occur, parents will be notified. Together, staff, parents and the child will work together to modify behavior.
