Lower School Science at Friends

We believe that children are habitual investigators and need to get "elbow deep" in science digging, dissecting and collecting data.

The purpose of the Lower School Science program is to introduce children to scientific concepts, tools and methods of investigation. The Science program emphasizes hands-on experience, observation, discussion and research. At every level students practice making predictions, testing hypotheses and drawing conclusions as they learn about methods and tools used for scientific inquiry. Field trips support and enrich work in the classroom.

Themes, topics and concepts may vary from year to year based on the interests of children and teachers. The classroom teachers collaborate with the Science integrators in developing and implementing a dynamic curriculum. The Science curriculum is also supported by the specialists’ work in art, music, physical education, technology and the library.

In my lab classroom lower school students wonder, investigate, notice and reflect both individually and collaboratively with their peers.  A good amount of time is spent asking questions and discussing our wonderings. I often ask students, “What makes you say that?” to encourage deeper thinking about their responses and inquiries. Units of study are often back-loaded, rather than front-loaded, so that exploration, learning, inquiry and discovery can occur naturally and organically. This often happens prior to any formal instruction and before lesson content is shared.

The science lab classroom is a place where all are welcome and all are invited to explore and learn about the world around us.  Please enjoy browsing my site to explore our investigative studies.
