The leadership team consists of students who are placed in charge of delegated tasks. The leadership team consists of the drum major, student executive, guard & section leaders, and morale officer. Auditions for the leadership team take place in May for the following year. Students with strong instrumental/performance skills and a desire to learn more about music and leadership are encouraged to inquire with the director.
Section Leader (including Drum & Pit Captains) - Section leaders are upperclassmen who have demonstrated competence/mastery of their instrument and marching techniques. These people assist in the teaching and rehearsing of the marching band show. They must have earned a level of respect from their fellow bandsmen and have demonstrated leadership ability and desire. They must have the ability to lead their section while maintaining a positive rapport. They work under the supervision of the director and check in daily to see that they are well prepared for each rehearsal. They are responsible for running music rehearsals when needed, checking tuning and inspection of uniform dress. Auditions require marching, memorization of all major scales, calling of commands and composing an essay. Auditions for leadership team occur in May for the following year.
Color Guard Captain - The Guard Captain is a special type of section leader. The guard captain must exhibit strong leadership qualities, demonstrate extensive knowledge of marching fundamentals, equipment handling on rifle and flag, and possess advanced communication skills. A background in dance/choreography is helpful. Auditions require marching, original choreography, composing an essay and calling commands.
Morale Officer - The morale officer is an upperclassman that is committed to generating goodwill and positive motivation within the band. This person must demonstrate a dynamic personality and an ability to remain up-beat and positive in the face of opposition. Student must be a role model at all times. An audition for the leadership team is required for consideration of this position.
Field Captain - This a senior post of a logistical nature. The Field Captain’s job is to make sure that the field is ready for performance/rehearsal. From the podium, to the yard markers to having enough water, the field captains make the band happen! Student must be a role model at all times. An audition for the leadership team is required for consideration of this position.
Choreographer - This student is responsible for designing any dancing required in our shows. Student must have a dance background and be comfortable working with large groups. Furthermore, the choreographer must plan and be prepared to teach simple and complicated moves to students with little to no dance experience. The position is appointed annually. Any student with extensive dance/choreography experience should make it known to the director.
Public Relations - This student is responsible for all official communication outside of the band. The PR officer will communicate with our school district’s central office, the newspapers, and other departments in our school to ensure information about our performances and activities is disseminated. The position is appointed annually.
