Activities

Tractor Day

Started in 2007, Tractor Day started as a celebration of the importance of agriculture to our community and our state. Tractor Day has now grown to encompass the entire school as students from all backgrounds drive their tractors and lawn mowers. We have had many local celebrities visit us, including our Superintendent Mark Kopp, current Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles, past Miss Kentucky's, past Kentucky Commissioners of Agriculture, and other state and local officials.

Selling Calves

Part of the FFA Motto is doing to learn. Our students learn how to take care of bottle calves in the fall that will then be sold the following year. The students do all the work to raise these animals from bottle feeding during the cold months, to cleaning pens out. Our students then get to see this project full circle by taking those cattle to the Owenton Stockyards to be sold. The members who helped raise these animals get to see all their hard work pay off by watching the cattle go through the sale ring.

FFA Week Proclamation

"National FFA Week is a time for FFA members to host activities that raise awareness about the role FFA plays in the development of agriculture’s future leaders and the importance of agricultural education. National FFA Week always runs Saturday to Saturday and encompasses Feb. 22, George Washington’s birthday."

In 2020 our students had the honor of watching Governor Andy Beshear sign the official FFA Week Proclamation, stating that February 22-29th is officially FFA Week!

Farm BUREAU Speech Contest

Every fall FFA members compete in the Farm Bureau Speech Contest held by the Franklin County Farm Bureau. Students partake in an interview and give a 2 minute speech about an agriculture topic. Students are scored on poise, school involvement, depth of their resume, how they present their speech, and how their interview goes. There is a girls and boys division with winners from each going on to the district level. Past winners include Ryan Halligan, Michaela McCane, Alex Wheatley, and Abi McDonald won her division this year and represented her county proudly at the district competition in Owenton.

NAILE

FFA members attend the Rodeo at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) every year. NAILE is the world's single largest purebred show that encompasses all breeds of animals. Our students have the opportunity to visit the show during the day and then attend the North American Championship rodeo that night.

Farm Machinery Show

FFA members attend the Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Kentucky every year to learn about the new equipment and technology used in the agriculture industry. This event is a way for our students to network with businesses and start making connections that will help them after graduation.

FFA Camp

Members attend FFA Camp at the Kentucky FFA Leadership Center in Hardinsburg, Kentucky each summer. While at camp members learn how to be better leaders, what it takes to become a positive influence in their school, and plan what they want to accomplish throughout the year.

UK FIeld Day

Members attend the University of Kentucky Field Day every year in late April. They are able to compete in contests ranging from demonstrations, FFA quiz bowl, horse industry knowledge, vet science, and so many more!
