Retrieval practice is a strategy in which bringing information to mind enhances and boosts learning. Through the act of retrieval, or calling information to mind, our memory for that information is strengthened and we are more likely to remember it in the long-term.
Regular retrieval of knowledge helps us remember more effectively (Roediger et al, 2011). It helps us store knowledge in, and recall it from, the long-term memory and frees up space in the working memory to take on new knowledge (Hirsch, 2016).
Some of the retrieval strategies used at Servite include:
low-stakes quizzes (paper, google form, paired, silent self-quiz)
mapping
drawing
show what you know
two things
comparing
be the teacher
self explanation
demonstration and performance
elaborate interrogation (How and Why?)
tell the story
summarising
"Memory is the residue of thought." (Willingham, 2010)
