Here at Servite R.C. Primary School, we are passionate about ensuring that every one of our pupils becomes a fluent, confident and enthusiastic reader.
We prioritise the teaching of reading through phonics, using the Read Write Inc scheme. Alongside this, we promote a love of reading through: daily storytimes, reading lessons, our fantastic class libraries, high quality reading books, DEAR Time, book clubs, workshops and information sessions for parents, author visits and webinars and our annual Reading Week.
Once pupils have reached the end of the Read Write Inc phonics scheme, their reading accuracy and comprehension is assessed termly using PROBE. This involves each child reading a short text aloud 1:1 to a trained adult, before answering a set of questions to test whether they have understood what they read. These assessments give us an accurate reading age for each child, allowing us to carefully match them to the correct level of independent reading book from the Collins Big Cat scheme.
The children at Servite enjoy reading daily as part of their home learning. Independent reading is recorded in reading records which are a valuable means of communication between home and school about children's progress and love of reading.
Children take home reading books from the Collins Big Cat scheme. These books are attractive and stimulating and contain rich vocabulary. The scheme includes a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Characters, themes and settings are diverse. Many books link to knowledge taught in our curriculum in subjects such as history, geography, science and design technology.
Children particularly enjoy books from the 'Tara and Dani Binns' series, which explore STEM careers and challenge gender stereotypes. The 'Shinoy and the Chaos Crew' range of Collins Big Cat books include, fiction, non-fiction and graphic novels sure to get children hooked on books!
In Year 2 reading books are changed twice per week. This is to allow pupil to read each book three times:
Day 1 focus: Decoding
The first time your child reads a book, their main focus will be reading the words.
Day 2 focus: Increased fluency
The second time your child reads the book, the words will be more familiar and they should be able to read the majority of them without the need for sounding out and blending. As their fluency increases, they will have greater understanding of what they have read, as less of their focus is taken up by working out what the words say.
Day 3 focus: Fluent reading and reading with expression
The third time your child reads the book, they will be much more familiar with the text and should be able to read fluently and with expression. By this time they should have good comprehension of the text and be confident of the meaning of any new words.
In Key Stage 2, children begin to read longer books. Reading records are checked daily and reading books are changed whenever children are ready for a new book.
