A knowledge organiser is a document that contains key facts and information that children should know in order to have a good understanding of a unit of learning.
At Holy Cross, our knowledge organisers include:
key facts about the topic
key vocabulary or technical terms and their meanings
images such as maps and diagrams,
key dates, events and individuals
How are knowledge organsiers used at Servite?
Children are given the KO at the beginning of a unit to encourage discussions and identify any relevant prior learning. A copy is also sent home and made available on the class website.
The KO is referred to in every lesson and the key content identified for that particular lesson.
Throughout the unit, the KO is used as a regular retrieval tool. Children practice a range of retrieval activities based on the content of the KO. Children are encourage to self-check against the KO.
Teacher can use knowledge organiser to identify knowledge gaps throughout the topic.
Display an enlarged copy of the knowledge organiser on a working wall, encouraging children to add information around it during the topic.
Key vocabulary/facts are used for spelling and handwriting practice to support knowledge retrieval
Below is an example of a Knowledge Organiser.
