It has been a busy January so far at FPJS. Last week, we had such a brilliant day promoting times tables with our TT rock stars day. This is the first time we have ever had a "dress as a rock star day" in school and both students and teachers did not disappoint in their amazing efforts with costumes! Read more about this below.
We have also been busy extensively restocking our library and now have a huge variety of brilliant books to loan to children. The library is busy most lunchtimes with children exploring our new reads, plus our librarians pick out 4 top reads each week to share in celebration assembly. Don't forget the library is open after school on Mondays and Thursdays for parents to come and help children to choose new reads. Books are expensive, but we know how amazing the power of reading for pleasure is and all children can enjoy our books for free! Your child will soon be bringing home a checklist of all our new books per year group so they can explore and tick off as they read! You can also find all of our new book titles in the button below.
There are lots of exciting events coming up this term alongside great learning opportunities happening in the classrooms- read all about it in this edition.

Head of School
Recently, we have had in increased number of complaints from local residents about FPJS families inconsiderately parking during drop and pick up times. This includes blocking drives, dropping off children on the yellow zig-zag lines and performing dangerous 3-point-turns where the wheels of cars are mounting the pavement. This of course is not only inconsiderate to residents and other road users, but is also incredibly dangerous for our children. Please note, we will be monitoring the situation carefully and sending details of perpetrators to local traffic officers who will deal accordingly. We have encouraged residents to do the same to ensure the safety of our local community. Please do park away from these areas if you are able to walk a little further. Although it takes more time, there are many health and mental well-being benefits of children walking to school.

What a fantastic day we had on Friday 20th January, dressing up for our TT rock stars day! The day aimed to promote times tables and their importance and involved several "battles" between classes. In addition, a competition was set up throughout the week of students vs teachers. It was a fierce competition with many staff dedicated to outwitting the students! Teachers did win, but only on average speed and not in total score. Well done to Mr Sawle for being the most dedicated teacher and winning the top spot in the competition, and for Max B in Y6, Vanshika in Y4 and Ibrahim in Y3 for being the top most valuable players in the competition! Having played myself, I am awe of all the children who are in our fastest top 10- their speed of recall is outstanding! Thank you for all the kind donations which will help us purchase more maths manipulatives to deepen children's understanding of maths- we have currently raised over £1000! If you would still like to donate, please pay via scopay.com - in the Trips and Events tab under the heading TT ROCKSTARS FUNDRAISER.
Congratulations to all the children who took part in the Lions' club Swimarathon on Sunday 15th January. There were 7 teams entered and swimmers swam over 17 kilometres in total. Well done to the Platt's Piranhas team who swam a whopping 58 laps! Not only is this a fantastic sporting event for our children to participate in, but it also supports the school in raising funds. So far we have gained over £600 of funding due to the commitment and super swimming talents of the pupils who took part. Well done to all, and to parent Julie Parkinson who organised the teams. Great work swimmers!
Well done to the following children who are in our top 10 for attainment OR top ten for progress in their TT rock stars...
Well done to our current Spelling shed pupils who top the charts with their scores!
Well done to Ibrahim pictured below for learning all his times tables to 10!
When the Eco Warriors and I met last time, the children were all given their new, green, shiny Eco Council badges which I know they are wearing with pride around school.
Next week, the Eco Council will be meeting ahead of our "Cutting Carbon" campaign in the week before half term.
More than 20% of the UK’s carbon footprint comes from generating energy. For schools in 2022, this will result in a whopping £1billion of energy bills!
Most of our energy in the UK comes from burning fossil fuels. This pumps harmful greenhouse gases, packed with carbon, into our atmosphere, damaging the environment. Supply always meets demand. The more energy that we use, the more fossil fuels will be burned.
We hope we can inspire you at home to think about your energy usage and being more efficient.
This week, in school council meetings, we have focused on what different playground equipment to get for our school. Our school council have decided to do a survey to see what playground equipment we want.
First, we reflected on what equipment we already had.
Some of the equipments we listed
were:
- Ball scoopers
- Cricket bats/rounders bats
- Tennis balls
School council members surveyed (by doing a tally) pupils from year 3,4,5 and 6. There was a variety of
different votes across the school. Some of them were:
-Table tennis
- Pogo sticks
- Planet balls
- Yoga balls
Next week, we are going to be examining the results of our survey and taking further actions to improve our wonderful school!
This week has been another fantastic week in Year 3!
In English we have been using our persuasive language to write a letter to Mrs Clark to request an Egyptian day - so watch this space!
In maths we have been completing our topic on Multiplication and Division by dividing using remainders, finding how many ways to find an amount and scaling.
In French we have been continuing to count to 20.
In science we have been looking at parts of a plant and labelling these as well as discussing what each part does for the plant.
On Friday we had our Rock Star day and the children all looked absolutely wonderful! We used the day to have battles with other classes on TT Rock Stars as well as lots of other mathematical games and tasks throughout the day.
Mrs Barry- Y3 Team Leader
Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt over the last few weeks!:
What was The River Nile used for?
How many ways can you make a new number from the digits 6, 7 and 4?
What does the word 'bouyant' mean?
100 things you should know about Ancient Egypt - Miles Kelly Publishing
The story of Tutankhamen - Patricia Cleveland -Peck
Mummies unwrapped - Tom Froese
Over the last few weeks, year 4 have shown such increased independence in their work.
We have been working on non-chronological reports in English and the children have produced wonderful work based on their own, made-up 'land'. The teachers have enjoyed seeing the children's vivid imaginations as well as their exciting descriptive vocabulary!
In maths, we have been working on the written method for multiplication and division. Many children have found this tricky, but have shown such excellent perseverance. Thanks to our Rockstar Day last week, we have seen a huge increase in the pace of our year 4 children's times tables. Keep up the great work on TTRS - many of you are even beating the teachers' times!!!
Learning about sound has been a really interesting topic in science. Children have been learning about using materials for sound insulation and most recently carried out an exciting investigation involving making their own headphones!
Learning about impressionism in Art has encouraged our year 4 children to produce some wonderful art work in the style of Monet - have a look at the photos in the newsletter to see some of our final pieces.
Mrs Barbosa Y4 Team Leader
Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt over the last few weeks:
Can you explain how sound travels?
What are some of the features of impressionism?
Can you explain how to use the written method to solve 165 ÷4?
Earth Shattering Events - Robin Jacobs and Sophie Williams
The Story of Flight - Jakob Whitfield
A Necklace of Raindrops - Joan Aiken
We are nearing the end of the term and it has gone so quickly! The children have been busy in all subjects accross the curriculum and we couldn't be prouder of how much effort they are putting in at the moment. Keep it up, Year 5!
In maths, we have been learning about all things fractions! The children have grasped what a fraction is, the units of a fraction, equivalence and how to turn improper fractions into mixed numbers. We are continuing to learn about how to add, subtract and multiply them.
In English, we are enjoying reading about Greek myths and now we are starting to look at creating our own in writing lessons. The children have been engaged in the mystery and imagination of the stories.
Our reading and writing units link nicely with our history on Ancient Greece where the children learned what it was like to live in either Athens or Sparta. As you can imagine, there were lots of differing opinions! We are looking forward to our Greek day in the last week of term.
In art we have looked at two famous artists; Stephen Wiltshire and Vincent Van Gogh who the children have been inspired by to create a cityscape and night sky. I will post some pictures of their final pieces at the end of term. I hope you will be impressed!
Miss Edwards, Y5 Team Leader
Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt over the last few weeks:
13/4 is an improper fraction. Can you turn it into a mixed number?
Can you name some of the famous pieces of art that Van Gogh painted?
What Greek myths have we read in Year 5 so far?
Rumble Star - Abi Elphinstone
The Haunting if Aveline Jones - Phil Hickes
New Kid - Jerry Craft
Over the past couple of weeks, Year 6 have been working hard developing their writing skills. We have been writing a news report on a twisted fairy tale focusing on our vocabulary and writing structure. We look forward to sharing these with you.
In topic, we have been comparing the ancient civilisations that we have learnt throughout FPJS (Egyptians, Maya and Greeks) in order to discover who was the most advance. We have been delving into their number systems, buildings and hierarchy. I wonder who will come out on top?
In science, we have been learning about evolution and exploring inheritance. We have been drawing on our knowledge to compare extinct animals to animals that live on our world today.
We have come a long way with learning how to play the ukulele and have begun to learn chords.
In art, we have been exploring the grid method and have begun to replicate the work of Stanley Spencer.
Miss Morales, Y6 Team Leader
Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt over the last few weeks:
How would the grid method help to draw complex drawing?
What civilisation had the most advance cities?
What is an IP address?
Dawin's Dragon - Linsay Galvin
The Viewer - Shaun Tan
Infinite lives of Maisie Day- Christopher Edge
On Tuesday 24th January the children pictured (above) represented the school at the Badminton Rackets Pack Festival at Altwood School. This event was aimed at children who had little to no experience in the sport, that were keen to experience a new sport or challenge.
The competition had 8 different stations with 7 of those being small badminton based activities with 1 rest station. Every child engaged fully with the event and thoroughly enjoyed it. Some of these stations included activites such as: bowling a sponge ball and batting it with a racket, working in pairs to serve and catch shuttlecocks and relay races involving shuttlecocks. At each station the children all had the opportunity to score points for the team with the winning team going onto represent Ascot and Maidenhead Schools at the Berkshire Games.
I was extremely pleased and impressed with the levels of maturity and determination displayed by every single one of these children as they battled it out with other schools. We managed to secure a 2nd place finish out of 8 schools in what was a very close call for top spot. I could not be any prouder of each and every one of the team.
All of the children were excited when they were presented with their medals and looked so proud to have represented FPJS in a competition, with some going on to say "I'm really glad I came Mr Manez."
You should all be so happy with the result and so pleased with yourself. Huge congratulations to you all!
I hope this has given you an insight into the sport and hope this ignites a spark to continue to try new sports and challenges.
Mr Manez
Happy School Bags
Thank you to everyone who brought along a filled Happy School Bag on the 17th January. you helped to raise an impressive £230, a great start to the year!
Coin & note collection - 21st & 22nd Feb
On Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd of February, the FPSA will be collecting coins and bank notes (both sterling and foreign currency) which may be clogging up your drawers. You can give us ANY currency including current or out of date UK currency and current or out of date foreign currency. We will be outside the Infants gates between 08.35 and 09.05 so please dig deep and get rid of that holiday and old change.
FPSA team
As a result of some recent changes within the FPSA, we are now looking for some volunteers to join the team. Our AGM is coming up on Wednesday 29th March and we are after the following:
Secretary - we are looking for someone that will take on the admin side of things including communication to the schools, parents & carers. Support will be given by the Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer and all other team members. No experience necessary!
Team members - we would really appreciate more members to help us plan and run our events in 2023 and beyond. If you have lots of enthusiasm, some spare time, the ability to get stuck in and work together as a team, we would love to hear from you!
If you are interested in any of the above roles, please get in touch at fpsa.ebox@gmail.com or reach out to any member of the FPSA.
At FPJS we believe that everyone can play their part in keeping children safe. Therefore, we wanted to share news of the launch of the NSPCC Campaign, 'Listen Up, Speak Up' which is aimed at giving adults practical advice and confidence to know what to do and who to speak to if they're concerned about a child. The campaign includes online training on seeking support and speaking up for children. The advice is based on the mnemonic DOTS which is designed to address the barriers to people acting on concerns.
DOTS stands for:
Don’t ignore it
Observe the situation
Think: If not you, then who?
Speak up.
Further information is available via the NSPCC news story: Listen Up, Speak Up campaign provides training to spot and report abuse
You can sign up and take the training via: https://www.nspcc.org.uk/support-us/listen-up-speak-up/
