It has only been a short while since the holidays ended, but it already seems like Christmas never happened! It has been great getting back into the swing of things once again, and seeing our children immersed and engaged in their learning. The weather has been dull, wet and windy, but there is such a buzz of excitement around the school as the children embark on exciting new topics as you will see on our Year group pages.
In our assemblies, we have been talking about how to live a meaningful life, based on our thought for the week "Don't be mean, be meaningful" and what practical things you can do to live a happy and meaningful life. Ask your child to see if they can remember the 4 key ingredients- 1) Joining in and being part of the team, 2) Finding your passion, 3) Getting outside and noticing things, 4) Being grateful every day. They are important lessons for adults too and as parents, we can support our children to provide opportunities for children to join teams, finding new things to learn and getting outside for some fresh air- even when the weather is dismal!
We look forward to providing lots of opportunities for our children to find their meaningful life at school this term too!
Anna Clark
Head of School

As we approach "Internet Safety Day" in February, it is a timely reminder for parents of the importance of supporting children with devices to enable them to keep safe online. As many children may have been given new devices for Christmas, please do see the links below to support parents in setting up devices. As part of our computing and PSHE curriculum, our children have regular lessons each term focussing on the importance online safety where they are reminded of key messages on how they can keep safe online and behaviour appropriately when communicating to others in the digital world - you can see our updated computing curriculum which contains all of this information in the link: https://www.furzeplattjuniorschool.co.uk/computing-1/
If your children has a VR headset, there are other risks to be aware of. These can be found here:

We are hosting a TTRS day at FPJS where we would like all of the children (and staff!) to come to school dressed as rock stars. We have lots of exciting things lined up for the children to get involved in including a teacher vs students battle throughout the week, class battles throughout the day, a special TTRS assembly and more!
For this day, we are asking for a voluntary contribution to go towards enhancing the maths resources for the school. This will be available to pay via scopay under TTRS fundraiser.
We look forward to seeing all of our times table rockstars next Friday!
Well done to the following children who are in our top 10 for attainment OR top ten for progress in their TT rock stars...
Well done to our current Spelling shed pupils who top the charts with their scores!
Well done to all the children pictured below for learning all their times tables to 10!
Welcome to our first Eco Council update!
Behind the scenes, the children and I are trying to make our school more eco friendly. We are also working towards earning our Eco School's Green Flag award which means that the school will have a Green Flag status and also be recognised as an eco friendly school. There is lots to do!
Once established as a group in October 2022, our first project was designing posters for the FPJS Christmas Fair. We hope you saw them & they helped you to think carefully about which bin to place your waste in. We hope to use our posters again for other school events ensuring that we are disposing of rubbish in an eco friendly way.
Our next task is to take part in the 'Cut Your Carbon' campaign which will be running the week commencing the 6th February 2023. The Eco Warriors will be investigating the school's energy usage and how we can cut back on carbon.
Did you know that 60% of the energy used in education settings is made from burning fossil fuels which release carbon into the atmosphere?
It has been wonderful to see the children back after the Christmas break. They have all settled back into school so well and we are all very proud.
In English we have been focusing on persuasive language, paragraphing and how to write a letter. The children have enjoyed using the dictionaries to find the definition of key words and use these in their writing.
In maths we have been multiplying by 10 and using pictorial representations to support our learning. The children have also been comparing multiplication sentences and deciding which ones are greater, less than or equal to the other.
In French we have been learning to say, write and learn number 1-6.
In Art we have been creating sculptures in the style of Anthony Gormley using play dough.
For our RE lessons we have been looking at how we feel better when we are sick and what we can do to help others.

Year 4 have made such a positive start to the new term! Everyone has been working so hard and showing such enthusiasm for their learning.
We have started the term with a unit on report writing. The children have been learning about the language features that are used in non-chronological reports such as language of comparison and conjunctions to add information.
In maths, we have been continuing our work on learning our times tables and have also been using our knowledge of place value to multiply and divide numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. Some of us have found it tricky, but our perseverance is really paying off!
We have been learning about how sound travels to our ears in our science lessons. There will be lots of upcoming practical lessons linked with sound - it could get noisy!
Over the next few weeks, we have lots to look forward to including a visit from Al Sylvester, a mountaineering expert!

I hope all families have managed to have a restful break over the Christmas period and getting back into a routine hasn't been too taxing.
This week we have been looking at how to write persuasive letters in a mature and justified way. We are hoping to start writing our own letters to Mrs Clark next week and the purpose of our writing is to persuade her to change or abolish the Year 5 homework. We will keep you posted with the results!
In maths, we have been revising our short and long multiplication and division methods and will be moving on to fractions next week.
The children have enjoyed working scientifically with different materials and experimenting with dissolving. We will be looking at how materials can be separated next week.
In history, we have gone back in time to Ancient Greece. We are discovering many things about the country and why the civilisation has been impactful on life today. Keep your eyes peeled for Greek Day in the last week of term! More details to follow at a later date.
Next week, we look forward to welcoming Berkshire Maestro's into school who will be teaching Year 5 music. We are looking forward to playing the samba!

This week we have been exploring the world of fairy tales and we have begun to plan a news report focusing particularly on the structure of our writing. We are looking forward to sharing these with you shortly.
In maths, we have been learning how to round decimals and we have been making connections between decimals and fractions.
In history, we have been delving back into our previous knowledge of the Egyptian, Maya and Greek civilisations. We are comparing parts of their history to help us ultimately decide which civilisation was the most advanced.

Another term and lots of opportunities for PE to come- we will shortly have Badminton competitions, sportshall athletics and the dance festival- which Heron class (Y6) are taking part in.
Lessons have begun this term with the focus on gymnastics and netball. I have been really impressed with the quality of the routines in gymnastics and the way the children are working so successfully with partners.
At lunchtimes, the Maidenhead Magpies have continued working with all children who want to participate in football sessions and we have now extended this to include sessions on Weds and Fri for girls only pitches. I would like to encourage all girls who want to take part to have a go! Additionally, the girls football team will also receive bespoke training sessions on Tuesday lunchtime with the iPro coaches.
Don't forget- if you are joining in at lunchtime to play football, you MUST bring in a different kit and football boots as is it currently very muddy! Also don't forget to bring a bag to put your muddy things in! You also need shin pads but we do have a set at school for children to use.
Mr Manez- PE coach
Mrs Tisshaw saw the girls play their first home game of the season against a very strong and enthusiastic Braywick Court side. The match was very physical, had great moments of football and showed the brilliant improvements the girls were making week on week.
Braywick had a lot of possession during the game however the Furze Platt girls never gave up. Great defensive displays saw the girl assess the determination of the Braywick Court team. The girls showed promise going forward and played good passing football throughout the game, they clearly were understanding their positions on the pitch increasingly. Unfortunately, a couple of moments of brilliance from a Braywick Court individual led to Braywick winning the game.
Nonetheless the display from every player on the pitch was improved and more amazing than before. I was lucky enough to watch some of the game that day and it was amazing to see how well the team had started working together, along with the excitement of not only the girls but supporters too who could also see the potential. Another great game for the FPJS Y6 girls’ team, well done to each of them!
Unfortunately, the next game for the girl’s team didn’t happen, however we used the hour afterschool to compete in a small sided friendly. This gave the girls a fantastic opportunity to understand their positions more and for myself, Mrs Tisshaw and Mr. Manez to help the girls with positioning and decision making. This session really showed how well the girls’ team had grown and developed.
Thank you to the team, all the supporters, Mr.Thorne who refereed our games and Mrs Tisshaw who has taken the girls team to all their games.
We are lucky enough this term to have iPro in on Tuesday lunchtimes to support our girls' team and we look forward to the next match!
Mr Sawle
Huge congratulations to Max Brown for being successful with his Berkshire cricket trials. He has gained a place in the Berkshire U11 county squad. There were 120 boys at the trial with only 25 selected for the squad which is a fantastic achievement!. There are further trials later this year for the county games, so we keep our fingers crossed Max is successful with these too. Well done Max, we are all so proud of you!
Mrs Winter
The FPSA will be collecting Happy School Bags from 8.35am until 9.05am on Tuesday 17th January. Filled bags are to be dropped by the fence near the gates of the Infants School playground. Please do not leave them there the night before. Your bags can be filled with: clean adults' and children's clothing, paired shoes and trainers, console games, souvenirs, handbags, belts, hats, accessories, jewellery, toiletries, perfumes, bed linen, towels and soft toys. Happy School Bags can't take: bric-a-brac, single shoes, mats, carpets, pillows, blankets, curtains, books, school uniforms. dirty, damaged or wet clothes. Please note all items must be clean especially clothing, bed linen, towels and footwear. If you have more than one bag, you can use any large bag (e.g. bin bag or swing-bin bag) to fill more stuff. Thank you for your support.
The FPSA Christmas fair was held on Saturday 3rd December and it was wonderful to see so many families attending the event. This was our first Christmas fair held since 2019.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped at the fair including stall volunteers (some who did all 3 hours on a stall!) and also the lovely people that helped us set up on Friday after school and Saturday morning and those who stayed behind to clear up. In addition, thank you to everyone who donated prizes for the 2 tombolas, the secrets room, the raffle or silent auction, or who baked some delicious cakes for the tea, coffee & cake stall. Thank you to the Eco Club for making some fantastic recycling signs for the different bins at the fair, this was our first fair to make a big effort to segregate different waste.
Finally, a big thank you to parent Emma Sweeting (www.sweetingsgreetings.com) for providing us with the wonderful fair poster picture.
The giant teddy bear's name was Nick and was won by Ben in year 3 at the Juniors. Maya from Bumblebee class won a prize having correctly guessed the 8 items in the 'What's in the Christmas Stocking?' game and Alan Hansen was drawn as the winning square in the 100 board. The winner kindly donated half of his winnings (£50) back to the FPSA.
Assuming matched-funding comes in, the event will have raised nearly £8,000 which is a fabulous total.
On Friday 9th December, the Junior discos were back in action and a big thank you to the Juniors staff who stayed behind to help run the event with a special mention to DJs Sawle and King for their excellent music and creating a wonderful vibe during the 2 discos.
The FPSA would like to say a huge thank you for all your support so far and we look forward to running more fund-raising events in 2023.
