Platinum Celebrations at FPJS

End of term 5 already? How did that happen?! We've had such a lot of exciting things happening in the last 2 weeks, which you can read about below, finishing up with a fantastic day today celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. It was wonderful to see the whole school working together in a different way, in "House groups", all creating different items for a display under a house gazebo in order to play tribute to this once in a lifetime event. Our Y6 children, led by the House captains, showed off their leadership skills, organising and supporting the younger children into creating the best displays in the time they had. Our pictures below show all the action from the day, including a picnic lunch, with music to add to the party atmosphere! Thank you very much to the FPSA for providing a free ice lolly for all the children too.

It has been lovely to see the FPSA event back up and running again, after what seems like a long time. Both the quiz for adults and the discos for the children were so much fun and I can't thank everyone involved enough for supporting these events which do help to provide additional funding for both schools.

Have a brilliant half term FPJS- we look forward to many more exciting events in our final term of the year!

Head Students Update

This week in FPJS we’ve had the Jubilee fever! First we’d like to thank the Year 4s for putting on an amazing class assembly and performing a superb rendition of Sing by Gary Barlow. Over the past few days, we have been preparing for Friday - our Platinum Jubilee Celebration. On Friday, the children worked their socks off, creating a small exhibit of wonderful art. With this art they then decorated their gazebos. They look absolutely brilliant and we are excited to see who will emerge victorious - see the main update for the result!

FPJS Celebrates Queen's Jubilee

Thanks to our Y6 children and our Head students, this was a brilliant day for everyone at FPJS. The teachers had chance to take a back step, and allow the Y6 children to lead the morning's activities, creating pieces for the "House display" all about the Platinum Jubilee, including creating a centre-piece crown, a table runner, bunting and lots of information about the Queen. The pictures show all the action from the day. The House that was judged to have created the best display, was Vikings, very closely followed by the Danes!

Y4 Class Assemblies

A huge congratulations to our year 4 children who performed excellent class assemblies this week. The children spoke loudly and clearly and showed off some excellent acting and singing skills also! I'm sure that those of you who came to watch learned lots about Queen Elizabeth II's upcoming jubilee. Well done on very successful performances Swift, Kingfisher and Skylark.

Y6 Silverstone Trip

Year 6 had a fantastic time at Silverstone on Thursday looking round the museum and attending a workshop and walking on the track. This is the first time we have been and the exciting display have surely excited some of the children to consider careers in STEM subjects and even possibly to be trackside with a Formula 1 team in the future. It was an amazing experience including a 4d immersive cinema racetrack at the end and a chance to find out about the history of the track - did you know it was also farm right up until the 1990s and part of the track was used in World War 2 as a runway. Plus if you are complaining about the cost of new tyres imagine having to replace them every 100miles at a cost of £4000 a pop. A great day out !

Mayor's Jubilee tea party

Written by Chizara- Y3

On Monday, Flint and I, the Jubilee card competition winners, had an afternoon to remember when we went to the Windsor Guildhall for a party.

When we got there, we saw a town crier, a serious man blocking a door and had a picture with the mayor. All of the adults were wearing paper crowns that they had made themselves. The mayor showed us where to go inside and told us that he’d see us upstairs.

When we went into the Guildhall we explored the museum and saw lots of old artefacts. We saw a model plane and colouring but before we could look around the whole museum a man told us to go upstairs.

We had a good look at the room and saw all the paintings of past kings and queens and huge chandeliers. Then, we sat down in our spaces and got an envelope each from the table. Inside the envelopes there was a smaller envelope with gems and picture of a crown with two strips you had to cut out and then we started to colour.

Next, the mayor gave a speech and told us that when we finished our crowns he we had to cut them out. When we cut our crowns out, we got four squares of double sided sticky tape to make the crown fit our heads.

After that, they gave us cake decorated with icing and a jubilee picture and a drink I chose ribena but I could’ve chosen water or apple juice and the mayor gave us certificates. When we finished our food and drink we took another picture with the mayor.

After we got our picture taken, we got goody bags and Union Jack flags and had a picture together.

School Uniform Survey- Please Help!

It is our school policy that all children wear school uniform when attending school.

Our policy is based on the belief that school uniform promotes a sense of pride in the school; creates a sense of community and belonging towards the school; is practical and distinctive; prevents distraction in class; makes children feel equal to their peers in terms of appearance; is chosen with health and safety in mind whilst in a school setting; mainly contains plain items (void of logos) which are available from many local retailers for competitive prices.

In Autumn 2021, the Department for Education published new statutory guidance for schools which seeks to make school uniform more affordable for families.

MR T's QUIZ NIGHT

Well done to the FPSA for organising such a brilliant quiz, finally back in the school hall and thanks to all the parents who attended! The juniors put forward two teams and we were eager to repeat our win from a few years previous. It started off well, with #therealfpjsteam in the lead, but sadly, the infants pipped us at the end to steal the trophy. Great fun and a great fun-raiser too! Thanks to Paul Thompson, aka Mr T for running simply the best quiz I've ever taken part in!

MAY DISCOS

It was our first May disco since 2019... and wow- it came back with an absolute bang! Mr Sawle and Mr King took over as the hosts for the evening, with Miss Johnson performing her 90's rave piece "Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat" and showing the children all the moves! The children seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the mixture of dancing and playing games. Well done to the FPSA for organising such a great event! We hope to have more in the future!

Year Group Updates

Year 3 News

Another busy term draws to a close and we can't believe that our year 3's will soon be year 4's.

In English, we have been summarising all our learning on volcanoes by writing a non-chronological report on them. We loved combining everything that we have learnt in topic and comprehension to create vibrant and engaging keynote presentations too!

Our science learning this half term has been all about plants. We have thought about the different parts of the plant and what they are used for as well as investigating where and when plants grow best. We particularly enjoyed exploring the school grounds to see what had grown where.

In maths, we have concluded our learning on shapes and are now able to spot them in the world around us and in technology we have been learning how to sew, thinking about a range of stitches - we'll continue working on this as we move into the final summer term.

Another huge well done for all your hard work this term - enjoy your well earned half term!

Mrs Lawrence-Davis Y3 Team Leader

Year 3- What are we learning?

Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt:

Why do plants have roots?

Can you name the 3D shapes we have been learning about in maths?

Tell me your favourite fact that you have learnt about volcanoes/earthquakes.

Our current reads we are enjoying in Y3...

Below are some of the texts that Year 3 have been enjoying as part of their comprehension lessons and for pleasure:

The Street Beneath My Feet - Charlotte Guillian

Egypt Magnified - David Long

The Puffin Keeper - Michael Morpurgo

Year 4 News

As always, our year 4 children have been working so hard here at FPJS. As well as learning and performing our class assemblies, the children have been learning how to tell the time on both analogue clocks and digital clocks as well as converting between units of time, such as seconds, minutes and hours.

In English, to support our class assemblies, we have written biographies about Queen Elizabeth II. It was very interesting to learn about her coronation, her childhood and her hobbies and interests. We are all very much looking forward to celebrating the jubilee next weekend.

In science, we have been doing lots of investigations around evaporation, dissolving and diluting, melting and freezing. It has been great fun learning about the changing states.

This week, we also had great fun baking carrot and oat muffins. In DT, we have been tasting sugar free cakes. We learnt about the Eatwell Plate and why reducing our sugar intake is so important for us. It was fantastic to make our own sugar free cakes and the children loved tasting them!

Have a great half term year 4!

Mrs Barbosa, Y4 Team Leader

Year 4- What are we learning?

How can you work out how many seconds are in 6 and a half minutes?

What can you tell me about Queen Elizabeth II's life?

Who can you name from the Tudor family tree?

Our current reads we are enjoying in Y4...

Below are some of the books that Year 4 have been enjoying, as part of their book talk lessons and for pleasure!

Two Weeks with the Queen - Morris Gleitzman

The Firework Maker's Daughter - Philip Pullman

The Story of Flight - Jakob Whitfield

Year 5 News

As always, we've had another busy few weeks in Year 5.

To celebrate the Platinum Jubilee, the children have been writing their own fiction and non-fiction texts about the Queen. They have shown real maturity towards their writing by carefully looking back over their previous writing to choose an area of focus for them to develop. You will find copies of a few of the finished pieces in this newsletter!

Meanwhile, the children have been learning about the reasons deforestation occurs in the rainforest and the effect this has on the planet. They have then been using the iPads to show their understanding and persuade others to help take care of the rainforest.

Over the last few weeks, we have been spending time sketching at the pond area and observing the shapes and shading we discover there. The children have also been analysing the anatomy of a dragonfly with the aim of amalgamating these two drawings into a final, beautiful watercolour painting! Watch this space after half term for pictures of these!

Wishing you all a lovely half term break.

Mrs Pierron, Y5 Team Leader

Year 5- What are we learning?

Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt:

What effect is deforestation having on the planet?

Can you explain the features of a polygon? What is the difference between a regular and irregular polygon?

Tell me what you have researched about a famous animal conservationist.

Cloud Soup by Kate Wakeling

Year 6 News

Now we have recovered from SATs week it has been back to other lessons for year 6 and work in geography on deserts. This is a new topic area for year 6 and it has been really interesting to think about this for both the teachers and pupils. Did you know there are cold deserts as well as hot?

In English, we have actually been using a children's book "The Day The Crayons Quit" as an inspiration for our writing. In the story, all the crayons complain to their owner about how they are not used enough or are used too much. We considered how our stationery in the classroom might feel about the treatment they have received this year and the results we quite hilarious- lots of rulers upset that their owners still couldn't draw a straight line!

Do you know how electricity is made? Well year 6 do and should now be able to explain this as we had a look at something we all take for granted. With fuel bills on the rise, we explored how renewable energy saves a lot of the time and trouble to allow you to boil your kettle.

Well done to the year 6's for so far knowing all the lines in the school play - it is slowly taking shape but don't forget to learn the song lyrics!

Well done to the year 6's for helping lead the school in the Jubilee celebrations!

Time for a break and then we are back for the best term in year 6 - the play, Oscars, maths business project to name but a few things that will be happening. Enjoy a well deserved rest Y6!

Miss Johnson- Y6 Team Leader

Year 6- What are we learning?

What tips do you have to try and draw a mannequin in the right proportions?

How is electricity made?

How are deserts formed ( not to be confused with desserts although you could talk about the new jubilee pudding !) ?

our current reads we are enjoying in Y6...

The Boy Who Made Everyone Laugh - Helen Rutter

Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows - J K Rowling

The Star Outside My Window-Onjali Q Rauf

Sports Update

PE News!

What a brilliant end to the 5th term it has been. With each year group showing some fantastic skills in various sports and activities that we have been doing. This term FP have focussed and concentrated a lot on cricket skills as well as learning about the rules and regulations in rounders. In Cricket, plenty of throwing and catching has been covered by almost every pupil from all year groups. Not only this, but we have been learning the correct technique of how to bowl, as well as coaching one another the accurate way in which to hold and handle a cricket bat. Mrs Winter has been teaching mainly year 3 and 4 the understanding of the rules for a rounders match including learning about the dynamics of the pitch, when and where to run after you have struck the ball, and of course the basic but vital ways of fielding.

A BIG well done to all FP pupils who have had a jam packed term and we wish you a wonderful break during this Jubilee half term spectacular.

By Mr Kemp / Mrs Winter

Year 3/4 Cricket SKills

On Thursday 19th May, Mr Kemp took a mixed team of 14 pupils over to Altwood school to participate in the Dynamo cricket skills festival. A mixture of batting, bowling, fielding, throwing and catching were all used during this fun inclusive event. Mr Kemp was thoroughly impressed with everybody's attitude, behaviour, determination and positivity on what was such a beautiful sunny Thursday afternoon. FP managed to finish a well deserved 4th place which is a wonderful achievement for all involved. Well done!
