Term 6 begins

Our final term of the year has really started with a bang! Y3 had a fantastic Egyptian themed day last Friday, complete with stunning costumes, whilst year 4 picked a very sunny day to explore the London Eye. Thanks to all the parents who supported with these events, accompanying on trips and for the brilliant costumes made!

Yesterday, our fantastic Y5/6 choir performed spectacularly at the Hexagon as part of the Junior Music Festival. Many thanks to Miss Morales and Mrs Lawrence-Davis who have spent a lot of extra time rehearsing the children at lunchtimes so they could perform with passion and to Mr Kemp who accompanied the choir yesterday. I was privileged to watch the show and was incredibly proud of how each child performed with enthusiasm and confidence.

Final thanks to everyone who brought in something for the Tombola in exchange for wearing non-uniform today- we are very much looking forward to the FPSA summer fair on 25th June!

This term we are busy organising our staffing structure for next year- there are a number of changes which we will announce in due course- see the staffing section for more detail. Further information will follow in newsletter 16.

We have recently updated our registration systems at school, and all teachers now register children using an online system. Please can we remind parents that registration begins at 8.50am. Your child should be in the classroom at this time as this is when learning time begins. If your child arrives after 9am, this will be marked as an unauthorised absence in line with local authority guidance. Please do support your child to arrive on time, especially if they walk to school by themselves.

Y3 Egyptian Day

On Friday 10th June, year 3 took part in an amazing Egyptian day to kick off their learning on the Ancient Egyptians.

In the morning, the children learnt about Egyptian writing (or hieroglyphics!) and created their own cartouches. Following this, we all watched a fantastic show where we entered an ancient tomb and became enchanted by a historical curse!

During the afternoon, the children worked in 2 groups to learn more about Egyptian gods and artefacts.

And all whilst dressed as Egyptians too! See the Year 3 section for more photos.

Y4 London Trip

On Friday 10th June, year 4 took a coach up to London's Embankment. There was much excitement on the coach and, I'm sure our wonderful parent helpers will agree, many renditions of the songs that Mr Clark have taught the children over the last 8 weeks!!

First, we went on 40 minute river cruise along the Thames. The weather was glorious and we were able to sit on the upper deck of the boat and listen to our tour guide tell us all about the London landmarks that we could see. It was particularly interesting to see the entrance to the Tower of London where Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard would've been taken before they were beheaded!

Afterwards, we went onto the London Eye. It was incredible to see the London landmarks from above and we were even able to pick out Wembley Stadium in the distance!

We finished our trip with a picnic lunch in Jubilee park before returning to FPJS.

A great day was had by all! Thank you to all the year 4 children for their amazing behaviour and representing FPJS so brilliantly and also to our parent volunteers for all your help!

Junior Music Festival

On Thursday 16th June, the Year 5 & 6 choir took part in an exciting music festival at the Hexagon as part of Berkshire Maestro's singing programme

The theme of this year's concert was Change is a comin! and was all about protecting the planet and, particularly, saving the oceans. As part of the concert, the children learnt a whole range of songs relating to the ocean ranging from Under the Sea to the Wellerman Sea Shanty and even created their own junk shakers to play alongside the orchestra and live band.

With a much shorter amount of rehearsal time than usual, the children spent hours at home practicing and learning their words and it really showed.

What an amazing performance - well done for all your hard work!

Staff Update

As we enter into our final term of the year, FPJS has been busy looking ahead to staffing for 2022-23. We are currently organising our staffing and classes for 2022-23, and will communicate this when finalised in our next newsletter. As with previous years, there are times when we have had to say goodbye to staff who are moving on, moving away or retiring. This year is no exception as there are a number of staff who are leaving us for just those reasons. It is always difficult to say goodbye to staff who have been a huge part of our FPJS family but we are confident that our new staff joining us will be an asset to our strong team. We will update you further on this in due course.

Farewell To Mrs Hawkins

Goodbye and Good Luck to Mrs Emma Hawkins, our finance officer who joined us during the lockdown period of 2020. Emma has been a fantastic staff member who has worked incredibly hard during her time at the school, and has supported all the development of the behind the scenes work in the school office. Emma leaves us for a different type of challenge at RBWM and we wish her every success.

Mrs Slyfield's New Arrival

A huge congratulations to Mrs Slyfield and her husband who welcomed baby Rosie Slyfield into the world on Friday 3rd June at 11.45am. Baby Rosie and Mrs Slyfield are both doing well and everyone at FPJS hopes to have a cuddle with the newborn soon!

Mrs Lawrence-Davis To Relocate

Mrs Rosie Lawrence-Davis trained as a teacher with us in 2016 and we were thrilled when she accepted her first teaching role at FPJS. She very quickly moved to her current role as Y3 team leader where she has been both a fantastic teacher and manager. Mrs Lawrence-Davis and her husband have recently moved house, and Rosie has been commuting from Guildford each day! Mrs L-D has successfully secured a phase leader role in a new school in Guildford where she will begin in September. We will miss her very much as FPJS, but wish her every success in her new role.

Mrs Fraser set to retire

Mrs Lorna Fraser, our current Admin Officer has simply been the control centre of Furze Platt Juniors! Lorna joined the school in 1998 and has worked an incredible 24 years service! Lorna will be retiring from her role at the end of this academic year, and she is very much looking forward to spending time with her grandchildren. Lorna's knowledge of all the pupils and families over the years is second to none and we will be truly lost without her knowledge, her calm demeanor and her wonderful smile. We wish her all the best for her retirement and thank her for all her hard work over two decades!

Miss johnson set to head home...

Miss Johnson joined the school in 2001, and has worked at FPJS for over 20 years. In 2012, Miss Johnson relocated to Dorset to be near to her family with every intention of leaving FPJS and moving to a nearby school... ten years later, after turning down many opportunities in Dorset because she "couldn't bring herself to leave FPJS", she is finally making her exit from FPJS. As you can imagine, this has not been any easy decision for Miss Johnson to make (it took her 10 years after all!) but she has decided to take up a very different role, and from September she will be teaching design and technology (textiles) in a secondary school in Bournemouth. This is a part time role, which will also enable Miss Johnson to spend time on her other passion, script-writing. We will be incredibly sad to see Miss Johnson finally leave us; she has been an incredible teacher and a huge part of FPJS for many years, and involved with many aspects of school life including the Y6 play, comic relief, talent shows, oscars event, discos, comparing the sports day and ensuring that Y6 children at FPJS get the absolute best send off they can have. It will be hard to say goodbye to such a big part of the team, but we know this is the right time for Miss Johnson and she is excited to take up a very different challenge. Miss Johnson has always said at Sports Day that she can't leave until Romans win... let's see if that happens next week!

Meet our new year 3 team leader

We are delighted to introduce you to Mrs Cindy Barry, who will be taking over as Year 3 team leader from September. Mrs Barry is a highly experienced team leader who is currently working at Dedworth Green First school, who has a passion for maths and is an avid Arsenal supporter! Mrs Barry also lives very close to the school and is thrilled to be joining our team!

Meet our new office manager

As Mrs Fraser prepares to say her final farewell to FPJS, we are delighted to announce that we have a very familiar face joining our office team. Miss Jodie Lovegrove, currently working as a teaching assistant with our Year 3 team, has gained the position of FPJS Admin Officer and will commence her new role from September 2022. Miss Lovegrove has much previous administrator experience and also knows the school, many of the pupils and families well and is excited to take on a new challenge.

Year Group Updates

Year 3 News

It has been a fantastic start to our last term!

In maths, we have been learning all about measurement and capacity and have been thinking about how to convert between metres and centimetres as well as how to read different scales when weighing. Feel free to put these new skills to use over the weekend in your cooking and baking!

Our English learning has seen us mastering the perfect present tense and honing in on our grammar. This week, we have used kungfu punctuation to really think about exactly where those full stops, exclamation marks and question marks go.

We have continued to work hard on our sewing, designing our final book mark on the iPads and creating a pattern that we will follow as well as creating our own Egyptian mummies too! In topic, we started our exciting learning on Egyptians with a wonderful show and workshop from Freshwater Theatre - I wonder if anyone was able to rid themselves of the curse!

Mrs Lawrence-Davis Y3 Team Leader

Year 3- What are we learning?

Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt:

How many centimetres are there in a metre?

Tell me about the different stitches you've learnt. Which did you find the hardest/easiest? Why?

What was the name of the stone that helped us translate hieroglyphics?

Our current reads we are enjoying in Y3...

National Geographic - Prehistoric Mammals

Egyptology - Dugald Steer

Horrible Histories - Ancient Egyptians (Awful Egyptians/ Awesome Egyptians)

Year 4 News

Our last term in year 4 has arrived and the children have started, once again, in spectacular style.

We have begun a unit in English looking at playscripts. Last week saw us learning about stage directions and body language and this week we have been analysing short films. This is all building up to us creating our own movies on what year 4 is like so that we can share these with the current year 3 children before the end of the year. Keep an eye on Seesaw to see all our hard work!

In maths, last week focused on reading data from bar charts and pictograms and this week we have moved on to learning about different types of angles. We will be continuing our shape learning next week as we move on to looking at lines of symmetry.

In our topic lessons, we have been learning about continents, countries, the equator and the northern and southern hemispheres. It has become clear that we have some expert geographers among us!

Our first week back culminated in an excellent trip to the London Eye and a River Cruise along the Thames.

What a great start back!

Mrs Barbosa, Y4 Team Leader

Year 4- What are we learning?

Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt:

Can you name the seven continents?

What London landmarks did you see along the Thames during our river cruise?

Show me how to find out whether an angle is bigger or smaller than a right angle.

Our current reads we are enjoying in Y4...

Below are some of the books that Year 4 have been enjoying, as part of their book talk lessons and for pleasure!

Real Life Mysteries; Can You Explain the Unexplained? By Susan Martineau

The Good Thieves by Katherine Rundell

Black and British by David Olusoga

Year 5 News

I can't believe we are in the final term of the school year already!

We have now started our last history unit of work all about the Maya civilisation. The children already have a good overview of the time period and how it fits in to their previous learning on the Ancient Egyptians and the Ancient Greeks. We have been researching the Maya number system, comparing it to Roman numerals and deciding which is the most efficient system to use.

Meanwhile, in Design and Technology, the children have started to research different types of bread found all over the world. In the coming weeks we are looking forward to taste testing a variety of breads before designing our own recipes to bake.

In Maths we are learning all about position and direction. The children have learnt how to correctly read co-ordinates and also reflect and translate shapes. In English we are analysing the fantastic poem, the Jabberwocky. In the coming weeks we will be creating our own poems based on this and will be using Garage Band to perform our poems.

Mrs Pierron, Y5 Team Leader

Year 5- What are we learning?

Ask your child the following questions to see what they have learnt:

Do you think the number system used by the Maya or the Romans in the most efficient? Explain why.

What is the difference between a foetus and an embyro?

What is the same and what is different about the breads of the world you have researched?

Our current reads we are enjoying in Y5...

The Year 5 children would like to recommend the following books:

Clockwork by Philip Pullman

The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis

Scribbleboy by Philip Ridley

Year 6 News

Giacometti is a name you may have heard of but have never seen his work. Well, year 6 have had a brilliant go at recreating his art using wire and Modroc. After studying "What is Sculpture?" and having some very interesting discussions about whether we should have historical sculptures of people and why many sculptures are memorials to events, the year 6 studied the work of Giacometti and set about designing and modelling their own version. The results were stunning and it has been like having our very own sculpture museum at the side of the classrooms to admire!

It will soon be time for the year 6 business project and the teams have been given their £10 to turn into profit and we are excited to see what they end up making! The rest of the school will be sent details about when and where to buy in the near future.

Year 6 were very interested to find out what the internet really is in a recent lesson and how messages are sent . So if you don't know your I.P.s from your ISP they should be able to tell you! In addition, try asking them why a manhole cover on a beach in Cornwall might be more interesting than you think...

Miss Johnson- Y6 Team Leader

Year 6- What are we learning?

What is the internet?

How do we actually draw circuit diagrams and why ?

Who was Giacometti and what were the key features of his sculptures ?

Our current reads we are enjoying in Y6...

The Battle for Perfect - Helena Duggan

The Dream Robbery - Greg James and Chris Smith

There May be a Castle- Piers Torday
