We have welcomed our children back after the Easter break to what has already been a very busy and exciting start, with 'Brilliant Beginnings' to launch our projects for the Summer Term. Please see our Year Group News items below to find out more...

In addition, we have been so pleased to see the Blue Tit eggs in our nesting box hatch and have been eagerly watching each day to see how the chicks are growing and developing. Don't forget, you can watch our BirdCam at home too! http://www.seenature.org.uk/schools/furze-platt-infant-school/

Early Years News

Our Bumblebees, Caterpillars and Dragonflies have started their Summer Term topic all about Journeys. They began with their brilliant beginning and went on a journey around the school grounds. Following this our Early Years children discussed their route and created their own maps.

We shared the story, A ticket Around the World by Natalia Diaz and Melissa Owens. This led to some lovely discussions about where we live and the children were able to share information about counties that are meaningful to them. The children were inspired to then build places that they had visited, using our new blocks and small world characters. We challenged the children to follow the Podley plan to create an aeroplane that could transport them anywhere in the world. They worked together and played cooperatively to follow the instructions and build the vehicle.

This week the children have begun retelling the traditional tale, The Gingerbread Man and are excited to bake their own next week.

Year 1 News

What a brilliant start to our new project 'We're Going on an Adventure!' we have had!

We started this with our Brilliant Beginning: 'Let's Celebrate our World'. We were all given passports and went to 'visit' 6 different countries including; Pakistan, Australia, South Africa, Alaska, Wales and Romania. A huge thank to you to two of our parents who shared their own experiences of Romania. The children also brought in different souvenirs, photos and clothing of different countries they have experienced and shared this with their friends.

This week Mrs Presencer led an assembly all about The Gambia, we have been exploring the similarities and differences between our country and The Gambia with a focus on water usage.

In Outdoor Learning we have been busy planting lots of different vegetables and learning about what living things need to grow.

Year 2 News

We have been busy launching our project 'Wonderful Water!', which started with our Brilliant Beginning - a 'Wonderful Water Creative Day' all about water. We explored two artists, Hokusai and J.M.W. Turner and had a go at recreating our own versions of some of their most famous artwork. We also explored different animals that use the Pacific Ocean as their habitat and created our own class collages.

We have been using maps and aerial photographs to investigate the location of the world's five oceans and seeing the position of them in relation to the continents. We have also compared the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

This week we have been learning all about lighthouses and using The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch story to inspire us. In addition to this, we have also been creating our own forms of transport (our own mini flotillia of boats) to replicate those used during the Dunkirk evacuations of the Second World War. Once we have finished making our models we will be testing them, to see how successfully we have applied our knowledge of different materials to the challenge!

School Council Update

In School Council this week we have been making posters for our classrooms to advertise ice creams being sold every Friday by the FPSA on the school drive! We hope our brilliant posters will promote some more ice cream sales!

KS1 Eid Assembly

A huge thank you to Mrs Magan and Mrs Akhter for teaching our Key Stage 1 children all about Eid. We learnt all about how and why Eid is celebrated. The children learnt lots and had a great time!

Olive Room News

We have been enjoying using our new Olive garden. All of the children enjoy to bounce and play with the water tray.

Nurture Group News

We are delighted in nurture to welcome 9 new children to our group. They have all settled in very well and have had fun making self portraits and door decorations.

Continuing our water theme, we have started to make an underwater display based on the Julia Donaldson book, Tiddler. We have also been getting our hands dirty planting up peas and sunflowers as well as starting to create cress heads.

Commonweath Legacy Games Hazel Class

On Wednesday morning Hazel Class had lots of fun taking part in the Commonwealth Games Legacy Festival at Altwood School. We were joined by other local Yr1/2 classes and although we had a spot of rain, it didn't stop the fun we had! We took part in a variety of different games such as running, jumping, throwing and we even had a big relay race with all the adults too! We discovered some new talents and practiced our sportsmanship skills. Overall, lots of fun and a brilliant morning!

Platinum Jubilee Competition

- Winners Announced!

Many congratulations and well done to all our children who took part in our Jubilee competition to design a cake for the Queen's 70th Jubilee. We had some absolutely brilliant entries showing lots of creativity and imagination. We were so impressed - and Miss Clarke, our school cook, had a huge challenge when judging the entries.

Every child who entered the competition received a house point, with those who were runners-up receiving 20 house points! The winners overall are:

Emily (Oak Class, Year 1) and Liam (Holly Class, Year 2)

Both winners, will be attending the Platinum Jubilee Children's Party in the Guildhall, Windsor on Monday 23rd May. Very exciting indeed!

We have included some of the other amazing entries below - please do take a look!

Jubilee Cake Competition

Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

Continuing the Platinum Jubilee theme, as per our letter today, we are delighted to announce the arrangements in school for celebrations on Friday 27th May.

Before the day itself, the children will be helping to decorate the school by creating Union Jack Flags and bunting.

Thanks to Miss Johnson at FPJS, you may have already noticed some beautiful hanging baskets with red, white and blue flowers around our school sites too.

On Friday 27th May, children can wear non-uniform clothes – with a red, white and blue theme.

We will have a special Jubilee Assembly in the morning, followed by some creative themed activities for the children to enjoy in their classrooms.

Caterlink have devised a Jubilee Picnic Menu so that, weather permitting, our children will be able to enjoy a picnic lunch outdoors.

Thanks to the FPSA, every child in our school will receive a very special Platinum Jubilee bear and, in the afternoon, our children (and bears!) will have a Teddy Bear’s Picnic together in the Woodland Area.

Finally, after school, instead of the usual ice cream sales, the FPSA will kindly be providing an ice lolly for every child in the Infants and Juniors to enjoy.

We are keeping our fingers crossed for some lovely weather and hope that everyone will enjoy this very special day.
