Unit 1: Elements and

Principles of Art

Overview

In this unit students will learn and review the Elements and Principles of Art.

  • Students will practice identifying elements and principles in a variety of artworks.

  • Students will engage in writing about art in terms of how the elements and principles are utilized.

  • Students will be introduced to a variety of dry media in the Unit 1: Media Bootcamp

  • Students will create examples to show understanding of how to organize elements and principles to create engaging art work.

Task 1 - Vocabulary

In your sketchbook you will use 2 side by side pages (we call this a 'spread').

Step 1: Using a ruler or other straight edge divide the pages in half down the center. Then divide each half into four equal sections. This should create a total of 8 rectangles on each page.

Step 2: Write the word and complete definition for each element of art on the left page and the principles of art on the right page. Use one rectangle for each word and definition.

Task 4: The Creative Process & Mini Masterpiece

In this task you will be introduced to the steps of the Creative Process and engage in this process to develop your first Mini Masterpiece. The Creative Process is what you will use through out this course and any subsequent visual art courses you take. The Mini Masterpiece is a choice-based assignment you will complete in your sketchbook.
