English Language Arts News
8th graders have just completed a DBQ response essay (document-based question), exploring the topic: "How does the spirit triumph?" analyzing five different historical accounts from Holocaust survivors. This week we will continue to explore another survivor's tale, as we read Art Spiegelman's Pulitzer Prize-winning MAUS in class. (Students will have access to copies of the book in the classroom, so it is not necessary to purchase a personal copy) While engaging in character, theme, and quote analysis, students will continue to learn the remarkable story of how the human spirit triumphs in times of turmoil.
Spanish News
In Spanish students are adding to their conversations about food by saying which foods they want and prefer for each meal and for a snack. They can state which foods they like a lot, a little or not at all. We have introduced new verbs that go with food and we are working each day on these regular and irregular verbs. The Unit 4 test on Food is Wednesday, March 16. It will cover Food vocabulary, the verb Gustar (to like), regular and irregular verbs that go with Food, and will also include a Listening section.
Math News
This week in math, we started our Geometry Unit. To begin the unit, we will discuss four types of transformations of shapes including translations, reflections, rotations, and dilations. Later in this unit, we will cover types of angle relationships, Pythagorean Theorem, and Volume.
In Algebra, students are starting a new unit which entails solving quadratics. They will learn and practice many different methods such as factoring, completing the square, the square root method, and quadratic formula. Our next summative will be Friday, March 25th.
Accel A students are currently in our first unit in Geometry A. We are studying transformations on the coordinate plane to include translations, reflections, rotations, and other aspects of congruence. Our next summative assessment is scheduled for March 22nd.
