8th grade ELA is immersed in Unit 5: The Holocaust. All ELA classes are currently in the process of responding to the DBQ (Document-Based Question), "How Does the Spirit Triumph?". We will analyze five different documents to support our writing process. This assignment will be a summative grade, due next Friday, March 4th.

Spanish News

We have just started our fun unit on Food (La Comida). Students are getting familiar with basic food vocabulary and are able to say what foods they like and don’t like. They are describing their favorite meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In this unit students will also be learning new verbs to use with food. Our first assessment for this unit will be on Wednesday, March 16.

Math News

In 8th grade math, we will review all three methods to solve systems of equations in preparation for our upcoming test on Friday, March 4. Students will be expected to analyze graphs and word problems to determine the solution to the system as well use specific methods such as substitution and elimination to solve a given system of equations. We will begin our Geometry Unit after this summative.

Algebra will be picking back up with factoring this week. Students have learned to factor the GCF, factor by grouping, and factoring with three terms with the first term is one. Over the next two weeks, students will be learning to factor when the first term is NOT one and factoring special cases. Please make sure students are bringing their calculators to class and returning the ones if they are borrowing from the class set (they are yellow). Our next test will be Friday, March 4th.

The Accel A class is finishing up our final Algebra 1 unit on statistics over the next week. Our summative assessment will be March 4th. After the test, we will be moving on to Geometry A and begin studying transformations of geometric figures on the coordinate plane.

Science News

Hello Parents!!!

We are currently finishing up our Unit 9: Motion study. This unit was extremely heavy on the math concepts. The students have learned how to calculate for speed, velocity, acceleration and how to use distance/time and speed/time graphs to calculate for these math components. Our test is this Friday February 25th.

The next unit is Unit 10: Force and Newton’s Laws. We will be doing a personalized learning unit. This allows the students to work through the material at their own pace. Each day we will have a guided plan as to what needs to be completed to stay on target. This unit will have two summative grades: 1. The Personalized learning plan and 2. The Unit 10 test. We will also have two quiz grades built into the learning plan.

There is not a specific date that the students will complete the quizzes though since they are all working through the material at their own pace. The Personalized learning plan must be finished by March 15th . The unit 10 test will be on March 16th.

As always if you have any questions or concerns please reach out to your child’s science teacher.

Thanks!

Social Studies News

Georgia Studies classes are well into Unit 8, learning about key events leading up to U.S. involvement in World War II. This week we focused on the Lend-Lease Act which placed the US in a supplier position. By providing our allies with much needed military provisions, the US aimed to keep our country from front line involvement in the war. Georgia would make significant contributions to the war effort in this role, establishing itself as a logistics hub for shipbuilding, B-29 bomber planes, and military training bases. Students have begun to understand, however, that the bombing of Pearl Harbor forced America into the fight to prevent further safety and security threats to the US by the axis powers. Over the next week, students will gain greater insight on how the war impacted our state politically and economically, resulting in growth and prosperity after the war. The Unit 8 test is scheduled for March 9th. Next week, students will have an opportunity to show their learning of SS8H8 through formative assessments. For specific dates, please refer to the its Learning course for your child's Georgia Studies teacher.
